U.S. Air Force Captain Remoshay Nelson made history by becoming the first Black woman to serve as an officer with the elite Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration squadron. A proud Georgia native and Howard University alumna, Nelson joined the team as Public Affairs Officer in 2020. Since the Thunderbirds were founded in 1953, only a handful of African American officers had ever served, all men, until Nelson’s groundbreaking selection. In her role, she helped share the Thunderbird story with audiences nationwide, participated in orientation flights, and represented the team at major public events. Her achievement highlighted continued progress toward greater diversity in one of the Air Force’s most visible and prestigious units and continues to inspire future generations.
