21 years later. ⚜️
Mayor Helena Moreno was a young WDSU anchor when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. She reported through unimaginable loss while experiencing that trauma alongside the city she loved. In an interview last year reflecting on what New Orleans endured, Helena shared the powerful lesson of collaborative leadership that helped rebuild our city:
“...when you work urgently and in collaboration, you really can get some major things done. That level of funding that came to our area is what built up our levee system to what it is now. And that levee system, built up the way that it is now, has been able to withstand storms that are to the caliber of Katrina—and we proved that during Hurricane Ida, which also got to be a Category Five. That levee system protected us, so it did its job. And so that, to me, is the one big thing during Katrina that I said, wow, like that is inspiring. That is leadership.”
This year and always, we remember those we lost, honor those who helped us rebuild, and keep fighting every single day for the future our city deserves.
