At what point do we start listening to the majority on public safety?

A presentation during a City Council meeting this week called for the suspension of the Drones as First Responders program even though it has been welcomed by the public and already proven to save lives. Let's fact check some of what was presented:

-A call for service about a "homeless person blocking the sidewalk" was used as an example of improper use of a drone by officers....
FALSE. That call for service came from a concerned CITIZEN. Using a drone to immediately determine if the person was a risk to themself or others - and thus requires an officer's presence and/or EMS - is exactly how a drone can aid response.

-Example of misuse of ALPR cameras were cited as an issue...
FALSE. That's an entirely different technology unrelated to drones or NOPD. There have been NO examples of misuse of drones by the NOPD since the program launched in 2024.

-The response to the dangerous underground fire on Bourbon Street during Essence Fest weekend implied a misuse of thermal imaging…
FALSE. Thermal cameras are an accessory only used in specific instances...for example, to identify where a fire has spread in order to prevent loss of life.

-It was asserted that there were other costs to the public not being reported…
FALSE. This program is funded in part by the FQMD as approved by the Council and private donations. DFRs save taxpayer dollars by decreasing response times, creating a better use of limited manpower, and even reducing fuel costs.

-The NOPD was also referred to as a "toddler" by the presenting group....
FALSE. The NOPD is an extensively trained group of dedicated citizens who daily save lives. These “toddlers” are reducing the crime rate year over year and lead the nation in homicide clearance rates. The reference is disrespectful and unacceptable.

Conflating technologies and scare tactics do not help the community or the efficacy of its police officers. A majority of citizens support the use of technology to reduce crime. The DFR program should be supported.

An odd thing that happens when crime drops...

The media is able to cover the incidents that do occur in greater detail making it seem like there is more crime than there actually is.

Giving this perception is not intentional (hopefully). It's merely a product of an industry that has let crime lead the news for decades. Much like our detectives now have more bandwidth to build better cases, reporters now have more bandwidth to cover major incidents with coverage they might not have previously.

NOPJF thanks Pari Apostolakos for interviewing our Matthew Stone about this incident, the news phenomenon, the technology that could aid this investigation, and the NOPD Homicide Unit's incredible 98% solve rate.

Every life is precious and there is no doubt that the NOPD Homicide Unit will solve this one, but we are still encouraging the public to call in any tips or sightings.

"As of Aug. 12, the homicide unit's clearance rate this year stood at 98%"

And it's not just incredible detective work...Everyone is doing their part. Agencies are cooperating and the public is calling in tips.

The 2026 homicide rate is 25% lower than this date in 2025 and light years away from the 280 homicides recorded in 2022.

In just 4 years, that's 400 lives not lost, 1000's of hours of manpower not used, and Millions in dollars not spent on making the community whole.

Because of the community, the NOPJF is able to fuel this effort and:

🛡 Supply the Digital Forensics Unit with hardware to build cases.

and the people in these photos are the reason 💪

Mayor Helena Moreno recognized NOPD Sgt. Kurt Eischen today as an Outstanding Employee of the Quarter for his incredible work with NOPD recruitment.

He and Capt. Gwen Nolan (pictured in blue shirt) have turned the Recruiting Unit into a well-oiled machine in the last year selecting only the best candidates that apply. NOPJF has been there to lend a hand when needed and consult on marketing, target markets, or even run ads to attract officers leaving NYC. 😉

This unit, which has been under a microscope the last year, has nearly DOUBLED the number of monthly applicants and they're not slowing down. This is what great
leadership looks like.

🚨 CRITICAL MISSING JUVENILE - Kemon Terrell🚨
B/M, 22 y/o, 164 lbs.
*May be a threat to himself

GIST: On Monday August 17, 2026, at around 6:00pm, Kemon Terrell left the residence by jumping from the window. Mr. Terrell returned after 15 minutes, hugged his family, and then left again through the neighbor’s backyard. Since Wednesday, August 12th, Mr. Terrell has been acting erratic and speaking nonsensical. Mr. Terrell left the residence with no possessions and prior to leaving, gave away valuables to his little brother and packed up his belongings that he left in his room.

Mr. Terrell was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, red shorts, and black slippers. Mr.
Terrell has an earring in each ear and was wearing a gold cross necklace.

The headline today was "1 Dollar General left in New Orleans."

But let's focus on the Detectives protecting the more than 20 other dollar stores as well as the numerous CVS/Walgreens/discount retailers in New Orleans.

The NOPD Second District alone had 12 incidents last week (ref: MAX mtg 8/10/26) and made arrests in 2 of those incidents. When a few individuals are responsible for the bulk of the 150-200 shoplifting calls each month, each arrest makes an immediate impact.

One of those arrested subjects - Lester Booker - was arrested 3 MONTHS AGO.

Shoplifting may seem minor, but the impact it has on a community can be huge. Thank you to the diligent detectives for making this a priority!

W/M, 16-years-old, 6’0,” 120 pounds

Gist: The above pictured juvenile, Elwood Looney, was last observed at the intersection of Canal Street and South Galvez Street. Elwood fled the scene on foot last wearing a brown colored hoodie and blue jeans.

Elwood’s cellphone was last tracked to the 1600 Block of Jay Street. Officers relocated to the location but were unable to locate him. Elwood is diagnosed with Autism.
