The commander asked me if “I wasn’t afraid of being kidnapped” as his two trucks of masked soldiers left the area. The chief of the outpost in Sanje told us his harrowing kidnapping story which included the loss of his finger until his wife paid the half million franc ransom for him. David and I learned of this during the car ride with him and Amandine on the way to Sanje. We also were told that the previous day the Amazonian reactionary force had exploded a bomb at the President’s speech and had killed four of his soldiers. We set up the testing in Sonja and treated all 30 plus villagers with a Malaria rate of over 95 percent. It was on our way out of Sonja after our long day, that they told us that they’re council chairman had been abducted that morning at 1am. Our visit took on a greater importance for the villagers as their conflict grows more serious daily and they become more isolated. They were not forgotten this day. For us a quiet calm took over our return trip as we reflected on the day. The zones of violence were shifting and our time there has ended for now.

We made it to Sanje after being stopped by a convoy of 20 heavily armed masked army personnel leaving the area. In what was a most disturbing question the commander asked me “aren’t you afraid of being kidnapped?” I said I’m in David’s and Amandine’s hands while actually not understanding the danger we were facing....to be continued.

It was a brutal night for for mosquito bites because of the rain the prior night. Very hot today and we are headed over the border of the conflict zone to treat some more children with Amandine. It’s very tense we’re we are headed and we had at least one angry encounter everyday last week when visiting. No more pictures from the road while traveling through the conflict zone!!

“I first met David in 1988 in Times Square” said Chris Avildsen.David Robertson had survived a hit and run motor vehicle accident when he was 18. It would be the beginning of his inspirational journey that led him to his 30 year fight against Malaria and his efforts to help the most vulnerable among us.
