New York State AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento Applauds Passage of Pro Act
By New York State AFL-CIO on Yesterday, February 6 - 10:18pm

Albany – “The House of Representatives passed the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, (PRO) Act, H.R. 2474, a bill that would make the most significant changes to labor law in decades,” said Mario Cilento, president of the NYS AFL-CIO.

“The Pro Act would ensure a process for reaching a first contract once a union is recognized, impose penalties against employers who retaliate against organizing drives and provide more substantial relief for workers whose rights have been violated.

“These reforms are necessary to restore some balance to our country's labor laws in the face of the increasingly drastic lengths employers have gone to silence the voices of their workers.

“We are deeply disappointed Representatives Zeldin, King, Stefanik, and Reed voted no, casting their vote against working people.”

PROTECT THE RIGHT TO ORGANIZE

This Thursday, February 6, the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, H.R. 2474.

The PRO Act will restore fairness to the economy by strengthening the federal laws that give working people a voice on the job so they can negotiate for higher wages, better benefits, a more secure retirement and a safer workplace.

Yesterday, International President Matthew D. Loeb sent a letter urging support of the PRO Act to all members of the House. I invite you to read the letter and share it with your Local members: https://www.iatse.net/news/iatse-urges-congress-support-protecting-right-organize-act.

This legislation will penalize employers who violate workers’ right to organize, help workers secure a first contract, protect workers who go on strike, and close loopholes that allow companies to misclassify workers as independent contractors.

I ask you to please follow this link (https://actionnetwork.org/forms/call-your-representative-co-sponsor-the-pro-act?source=aflcio) and tell your Representative to pass the PRO Act. Once completing the brief form, you will receive a call from the AFL-CIO connecting you to the office of your Member of Congress. It takes just a few minutes – every constituent call is logged and your voice makes a difference in how they will ultimately vote.

Sample Script:

Hello, my name is [ name ] and I am a constituent living in [ your city / town ]. I’m also a proud union member of IATSE Local [ number ] and I’d like to ask Representative [ name ] to vote “YES” on the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, H.R. 2474 when it comes up for a vote on Thursday. This bill will strengthen the federal laws that give working people like me a voice on the job so we can negotiate for higher wages, better benefits, a more secure retirement and a safer workplace. Would you please pass this ask along to your boss? Thank you, I appreciate your time and service of our District.

Please share this information with your Locals via email and urge them to call this week as well. The PRO Act is a top priority for the IATSE to help us build an economy that works for all working families.

Tyler

IATSE POLITICAL ACTION

Happy New Year IATSE District Secretaries & Political Coordinators –

Legislative Wins

I’m delighted to kick off 2020 by updating you on two significant legislative victories that the IATSE helped to realize just before the holidays. Congress reached a bipartisan spending deal that included a full repeal of the 40% health benefits tax – known as the misnamed “Cadillac tax” – and increased federal arts funding.

I encourage you to read this linked IATSE press release for more information and share these wins with your Local membership to underscore the importance of what we’re fighting for.

New resources

As outlined in my initial outreach to you last year, the IATSE Political/Legislative Department has been hard at work creating the materials, resources, and infrastructure necessary to empower you and all IATSE members to deliver wins for working families in the 2020 election cycle and beyond.

I’m excited to roll out the following materials to you today, which are available for immediate use in your Local political program:

IATSE PAC One Pager: a one-pager explaining IATSE PAC and detailing its utilization for use in soliciting contributions from Local membership

2020 IATSE Federal Issue Agenda: a one-pager of the IATSE’s federal legislative priorities to educate Local membership and federal elected officials

State-by-state 2020 Election Planner: a one-pager for each state with key dates and voter information to support Local voter registration and turnout efforts

Request IATSE PAC Support Form: a form requesting IATSE PAC support for a candidate that any IATSE PAC contributor can submit to the Political/Legislative Department for consideration by the PAC Committee

At the Mid-Winter General Executive Board Meeting, we will be launching a new user-friendly IATSE PAC website that will facilitate contributions and house the above, and future, political resources for easy access. We will also roll out a new IATSE PAC Guide which contains pertinent information about the PAC and outlines ways to engage your Local. Finally, an election year timeline of political activism is in production and will be rolled out to you in the coming weeks.

Mid-Winter GEB Political Coordinator Breakfast

For those attending the Mid-Winter GEB in Dallas, I invite you to join me for a Political Coordinator breakfast on Tuesday, January 28th from 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM prior to the start of the morning session. I will make a brief presentation on our 2020 political program and some best practices for Political Coordinators, then have an open forum for Q & A. If you plan to attend, please click here to RSVP and additional details will be provided.
