Don’t kid yourself, local police would absolutely be apart of any effort to advance authoritarianism. Just another reason we should not have been funding policing to these levels.

Sen. Elissa Slotkin is warning voters to watch for a last-minute “security threat” before the midterms, saying it could be used to justify federal intervention in elections.

Speaking at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace on September 30, the Michigan Democrat and former CIA officer said Americans should be alert in the final 34 days before Election Day.

“The authoritarian playbook is very clear,” Slotkin said. “When you’re at risk of losing, you either A, make up a threat that only you can protect the American people from, or B, find a way for federal law enforcement or the military to seize ballots or voting machines.”

Slotkin pointed to Hungary under Viktor Orbán, saying he used a pipeline threat as a political tactic before an election. She argued Americans should treat any sudden, unfamiliar security warning with skepticism if it is used to bring in federal law enforcement or the military instead of local police.

Her comments come after the Trump administration sued 30 states over voter rolls, tried to restrict mail-in voting, and sent Justice Department election observers to Detroit, Hamtramck, East Lansing, and Lansing during Michigan’s primary. The administration has said these moves are about election security, ballot security, transparency, and compliance with federal law.

Slotkin also said Democrats should act if they retake Congress, including pursuing “signature cases” over what she called harmful abuses of taxpayer dollars.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment reported in the source material.

March 3, 1991. Los Angeles.
Rodney King, a 25-year-old Black man, led police on a high-speed chase. When he finally stopped, officers surrounded him.
What happened next was caught on camera.
George Holliday, a plumber, filmed from his balcony. The 81-second tape showed LAPD officers striking King with batons about 56 times, kicking him, and shocking him with a Taser while he was on the ground. King suffered a fractured skull, a broken cheekbone, and a broken ankle.
Holliday gave the footage to a local TV station. Within days, the whole world had seen it.
Four officers were charged. The trial was moved from Los Angeles to Simi Valley, a mostly white suburb. The jury had no Black members.
April 29, 1992: the verdict.
Not guilty on nearly every charge.
Within hours, Los Angeles erupted. The riots lasted six days. 63 people died, more than 2,000 were injured, and the damage topped $1 billion.
Two days in, King made a public plea: "Can we all get along?"
In 1993, a federal trial convicted two of the officers, Stacey Koon and Laurence Powell, of violating King's civil rights. Both got 30 months in prison. In 1994, King won $3.8 million in a civil suit against the city.
Rodney King died in 2012 at age 47.
The video didn't just show a beating. It forced America to ask who gets believed, and who gets protected.
