Como se debe de hacer política en el siglo XXI... Lo demás es bu****it.

"Locating a formal leadership structure among the various actors who have taken part in the estallido has been a perplexing task. As former Chilean student leader Noam Titelman wrote shortly after the initial wave of protest began, Chile was witnessing a “leaderless movement,” something that “is hard to find in the recent history of social movements” in Chile."

"The diversity of movements involved in the last year of protest is perhaps illustrative of an even more profound and democratic process than that which occurred in the early 1970sIn Garcés's words, contemporary Chile is being pushed toward reform by a “movement of society.” This notion, which the historian contrasts with the more traditional notion of a “social movement,” is meant to underscore the popular character of the last year of struggle—and in particular the way in which traditional political organizations and parties have been sidelined in favor of neighborhood groups, social organizations, and students representing a variety of political tendencies."

Chileans are determined to reinvent how democracy is practiced, starting with a new constitution.

*Repost*

As you may know, the City Council elections are taking place next year and it will be a contentious one for district 10 (Washington Heights, Inwood, and Marble Hill). We have four wonderful politically/socially active candidates running for the position. ⁣

In an attempt to continue to contribute to the strengthening of our democracy, pursue electoral education, community engagement, and overall better knowledge of the issues that most affect us. We have taken the initiative in organizing the first Candidates Town Hall Forum in our community. ⁣

La Sala Talks invites you to an expression that originates as a way for all four local candidates for City Council to meet with their neighbors and future constituents. An honest attempt to hear from them on all topics of interest to our community. ⁣

The open-air town hall will take place on Thursday, September 3rd at 6 p.m. The location for this forum will be at the Amelia Gorman Park, located on Wadsworth Terrace and W. 190th St, New York, NY 10040. ⁣

The next elections are significant, and we need everyone to engage civically, raise awareness among ourselves as neighbors, friends, and family. On behalf of La Sala Talks and friends, we thank you for your support because our community matters!⁣

Sincerely,⁣

La Sala Talks⁣

“I think the pandemic has reminded me that [things] can always be so much worse,” she said. “You want to be voting for someone you really believe in. But I don’t have a choice but to vote in November.”

It’s hard, right? Because we’ve been let down so many times. It’s hard to give the [Democratic] party another opportunity,” Aguayo said. “But we need to do damage control and vote and see what happens from there. I’ve been trying to reconcile my feelings, but there’s no other option. Biden is it.”

In Grand Rapids, Mich., years of inaction on immigration reform have left many Latinos disillusioned with both parties.

Like many African Americans living in the Jim Crow South, Fannie Lou Hamer was not aware she had voting rights. “I had never heard, until 1962, that black people could register and vote,” she once explained.

By that point, Hamer had become a nationally recognized civil rights activist, boldly advocating for the right to political participation that black Americans had long been denied.

The activist did not learn about her right to vote until she was 44, but once she did, she vigorously fought for black voting rights
