Pumpkin Smash 2024 was a smashing success! We smashed 400 pounds of pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns and gourds with Queens Botanical Garden’s custom-made catapult to turn Halloween leftovers into eco-friendly compost. Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend to join in the fun, reduce their food waste, and learn about sustainability.

Hold on to your pumpkins for the 2024 Pumpkin Smash! Join us on November 10th for a unique community composting event featuring a catapult Queens Botanical Garden. All are invited to bring their pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, and gourds to the Queens Botanical Garden’s Compost Yard for a fun-filled day of pumpkin launching, free apple cider, countertop compost containers and leaf bags while supplies last, and the opportunity to learn about sustainable composting.

The highlight of the event will be a custom-made pumpkin catapult, ready to launch leftover Halloween pumpkins into the air, smashing them into compostable pieces. Attendees will have the exciting opportunity to load and launch their own compostable pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, and gourds on the catapult, all while learning about the benefits of compost and the QBG composting program.
