Wrongfully Convicted" A miscarriage of justice primarily is the conviction and punishment of a person for a crime he or she did not commit.

The term can also apply to errors in the other direction—"errors of impunity", and to civil cases. Most criminal justice systems have some means to overturn, or "quash", a wrongful conviction, but this is often difficult to achieve. In some instances a wrongful conviction is not overturned for several years, or until after the innocent person has been executed, released from custody, or has died.

In the 1980s, across the five boroughs of New York City, there was a different kind of young man.

They were adolescents—but they lived like soldiers.

They came from neighborhoods where respect wasn’t given—it was earned. Where survival meant understanding the streets, the system, and the silence in between. Some were guilty. Some were innocent. But once you were caught in the system, it didn’t matter—you had to become something else just to make it through.

From the cells of Rikers Island to the prison yards of upstate New York, these young men faced a reality most people will never understand. Violence. Isolation. Loyalty. Betrayal. Growth. Trauma.

They weren’t just inmates.

They were what some called “C74 — Adolescents of War.”

Young men who had to fight—not always with fists—but with their minds, their will, and their identity. One-man armies when they had to be. Brothers when they could be.

This podcast is about them.
