I had a chance to chat yesterday with Assemblywoman Malliotakis about our shared vision for The Bronx and New York City. Make sure to get out and vote tomorrow for a mayor who cares about the city, not one who can be bought by his big donors. Polls open at 6.

Today I had the honor of receiving the support of the Columbus Citizens Foundation and their 41 Italian-American and Catholic affiliates. The history of Italians seeking the American Dream in the New World is closely intertwined with the history of our city, as it always has been. New York’s image has been largely shaped by Italian-Americans and the culture that they and their forebears have instilled within our identity as a city and a nation.

I am overjoyed to receive their support today as our quest continues to bring The Bronx the brighter future we so richly deserve. -JDP

On this Columbus Day, I'd like to take a moment to salute the Italian American community who have helped make this city so great. Whether athletes (like DiMaggio), politicians (like Rudy), entertainers (like Sinatra), or private citizens like the good people of Arthur Avenue, the New York Italian community is an integral part of our great city, adding to our shared culture and history every day.

Recently, there's been a fight down in city hall over Columbus, who was once honored with the second Monday in October. Columbus Day has, since its earliest days here in New York back in 1866, become a day of celebration for the Italian community in New York and around the country. On their chosen day and every day, I'm proud to stand with them, no matter which way the political winds may blow.

Happy Columbus Day, and G-d bless America. -JDP

Last night's mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip is an utterly despicable act of violence. This has no place in our great nation, and our heart breaks with the people of Nevada. Above our status as New Yorkers, we are Americans.

I will take this time, not to offer thoughts and prayers, although they are certainly extended, but to encourage people in Las Vegas, in New York, and in the whole country in between who might see this to go and give blood. With four hundred injuries in last night's attack, our supplies are about to see a serious withdrawal.

G-d bless America. -JDP

230 years ago in Philadelphia, our Founding Fathers signed the Constitution. After a revolution and a failed experiment in the Articles of Confederation, they had finished crafting a new American experiment, setting in place not just our form of government but our national values. The rights they protected, from speech to arms, the press to privacy, remain central to our lives even until today.

The foresight of our forefathers to set in stone our freedoms of speech and expression is something I appreciate every single day. The Founders made sure that you and I, and every single citizen of our great nation, have the ability to stand up and say what we believe. It's what makes us great. It's what keeps us American.

And so I'm glad to wish you all a very happy Constitution Day, and to remind you that this nation remains American so long as it remains free.
