Community Action for Safe Apartments (CASA), a project of New Settlement, is made up of community residents who work together to improve the living conditions in our neighborhood and maintain affordable housing through collective action. WHAT WE DO:
Individual Building Organizing: Assist tenants in forming and sustaining
strong Tenants Associations to:
- Organize to get repairs
- Fight against
landlord harassment
- Ensure that tenants know their rights
- Build a sense of community and accountability in the building
- Stop displacement
Coalition Organizing:
We bring tenants from different buildings together that are experiencing common problems or who have the same abusive landlord. Legislative Advocacy
We work with various state and city-wide coalitions such as the Real Rent Reform Campaign, fighting for broader, city and statewide policy objectives of safe and affordable housing and tighter protections for tenants. Tenant Education
We regularly conduct trainings and workshops around basic tenants’ rights and the importance of organizing tenant associations. Leadership Development
Our ultimate goal is to build a unified and empowered local community. We therefore use an organizing model that puts leadership development in the forefront.
