It is with deep and profound sadness the Officers and Members of Lindenwood VAC announce the passing of an active member of Lindenwood VAC Jose “Nef” Escobar, Sr. who served as a Driver and Ambulance Attendant, on Tuesday, August 29, 2023.

Jose Sr. joined Lindenwood VAC in 1996 and it was immediately apparent his love and dedication to his community. Jose loved his sports, but his first love was his family his children, Jose Jr and Monique who grew up around our Headquarters and both eventually became members of Lindenwood VAC. We were honored to have had Jose Sr as well as his family as members! Jose Sr. will be missed by everyone at Lindenwood VAC.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jose Jr. and Monique as well as the whole Escobar family as they cope with Jose Sr’s passing.

At this time no funeral arrangements have been made, please check this post for updates when they become available.

NCEMSF was saddened to hear of the passing of NCEMSF Life Member Stu Rosenhaus last week. An alumnus of Brooklyn College EMS and one of NCEMSF's founding members, Stu had a career as an EMS provider, EMS educator, and emergency manager that spanned more than 30 years. He was also a regular presenter at NCEMSF's annual conferences and in the early 2000s served as the editor of NCEMSF's first quarterly research publication, EMS Pulse. UPDATED: with Service and Interment information

It is with overwhelming sadness that Lindenwood VAC announces the sudden passing of Lieutenant Stuart Rosenhaus EMT, CIC, who served Lindenwood VAC as our membership officer for over twenty years. Stu also worked for Coney Island Hospital as Associate Director/Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. Stu became involved in prehospital care while attending CUNY Brooklyn College, where he volunteered with the Brooklyn College Emergency Medical Squad. Later, he became a Professor at Brooklyn College, teaching Standard First Aid and CPR Courses. Stu was an EMT Instructor and taught numerous individuals in becoming certified Emergency Medical Technicians. He has given numerous lectures at EMS conferences throughout the nation on a wide variety of topics that faced the emergency pre-hospital care sector especially those effecting volunteers. Over the course of Stu’s life, he has made an impact on countless number of lives and thru his dedication to EMS and EMS instruction has partly been responsible in saving thousands more lives. We will miss Stu very, very much.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Stu’s family including his brother Deputy Chief Todd Rosenhaus and his nephew EMT Matthew Rosenhaus who also both volunteer with Lindenwood VAC

Rest Easy Stu, we have it from here.

The Officers and Members of Lindenwood VAC extend our deepest condolences to our brothers and sisters of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Bureau of EMS on the senseless tragic loss of Lieutenant Paramedic Alison Russo-Elling, 61 a 24-year-veteran of the FDNY who was stabbed numerous times in an unprovoked attack on the street in the vicinity of 20th Avenue and Steinway Street earlier this afternoon. Lieutenant Russo-Elling was transported in critical condition to Mt. Sinai Queens Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries

Russo-Elling was appointed to the FDNY as an EMT in March of 1998. She was promoted to Paramedic in 2002, and to Lieutenant in 2016. She has worked at multiple EMS stations, including Station 20, Station 17, Station 16, Station 45, Queens Tactical Response Group and was serving at Station 49 at the time of her death.

Lt. Russo-Elling responded to the World Trade Center attacks, aiding in the rescue and recovery efforts. She is the 1,158th member of the Department to make the Supreme Sacrifice while serving our city.

We pray for peaceful eternal rest of Lt. Russo-Elling, and our thoughts and prayers are with Lt. Russo-Elling's family and her extended family at FDNY as they cope with her tragic loss.

We need to do better as a city, this senseless death can not go unanswered.

This year marks the anniversary of a television show that significantly changed the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) field in the United States. In the late 1960’s the US Department of Transportation (USDOT)and National Academy of Sciences released a study revealing the need for trained personnel to render aid to accident victims. Up until them Ambulances were staffed by people with little or no first aid training, the main job of these attendants was just to get the injured to the hospital as quick as they could. The study identified many areas of concern, including the lack of uniform training and the underfunding of ambulance services and emergency hospitals. This one report was the catalyst for change nationwide. By 1973, training standards were developed for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) as well as the funding to establish Emergency Medical Systems around the US. By 1977 a new level of EMS provider was established by USDOT, the Paramedic. Paramedics were EMT with additional training to administer advanced care in the field under the direction of a Physician. What they could do varied by jurisdiction, especially in the beginning as there was signifgant resistance from the medical community. Some Physician and Nursing associations were dead set against having advanced care that they believed should be performed only in hospital in the street. That year a new television show appeared in homes all across our nation. That show EMERGENCY! Demonstrated what a Fire Department based Paramedic program could do, and the lives it could save. The show got America interested in EMS and many wanted to replicate paramedicine in their communities. The implementation of paramedicine varied around the country, EMS based, Fire Based, Commercial based or Volunteer based, but access to paramedics and their advanced level of care can now be found in 99% of the US. In fact, many of us who chose to enter pre-hospital care field as an EMT or Paramedic will say the TV show EMERGENCY! was a huge factor in their career choice. COSI TV has produced a great show about the history of the show, in honor of the show’s 50th anniversary and the impact it has made on the EMS community. We invite you to give it a watch. We also invite you to consider a career in the pre-hospital care professions. Lastly, as always, we encourage you to get involved in your community and volunteer your time especially with Volunteer Ambulance or Fire services.

Join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of EMERGENCY! and enjoy COZI TV's most popular summer hit, "EMERGENCY! 50! The Show that Saved Your Life," in its...

The Officers and Members of Lindenwood VAC are saddened to learn of the passing of former NYC Paramedic Marvin Bethea. In the small world of EMS in NYC, it was hard not to have known him. He was a mentor and good friend to many of us in the EMS world. September 11, 2001, changed Marvin's life forever, but he did not let the illnesses keep him down. In fact, he was one of the many voices fighting to ensure all of the first responders who were sickened by the events of September 11 were included in the victim's fund. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Karen and his extended EMS family. Rest Easy Marvin, your watch is over, we have it from here.
