Now open‼️an exhibition celebrating graffiti, street art, public art, and the moments when creative expression bursts out of the walls of traditional institutions into everyday life.

In "Art of the Street: Selections from the Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld Collection" works by Karel Appel, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Red Grooms, among others, tell the story of a movement that began as an act of defiance and grew into a powerful, global artistic force.

It's !

In 1973, Congresswoman Bella Abzug championed legislation designating August 26 as Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the certification of the 19th Amendment and women’s constitutional right to vote. Abzug was one of just 16 women serving in the U.S. House of Representatives at the time.

Congress passed the 19th Amendment in June of 1919, and ratified it on August 18, 1920. It was certified by Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby on August 26, 1920.

RIP Dolly 💔

On December 14, 1980, Dolly Parton attended the premiere for the "9 to 5" movie, along with her co-stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, at the German restaurant Lüchow's on 110 East 14th. These images by Fred McDarrah from our collection give us a glimpse of that evening.

There is only one more week to see "Old Masters, New Amsterdam," through August 30 at The New York Historical!

Envision New Amsterdam (the Dutch settlement that became New York City) through the paintings of the Old Masters, including Rembrandt van Rijn.

This small painting was likely a study for Mary in Rembrandt's "Holy Family." With his signature ability to convey inner life and emotion, the artist seems to suggest that Mary's holiness lay in her unassuming humanity.

POV: You're four beers deep and just lost to your friend at cards.

In this 17th century scene by Jan Lievens, a gambling party has convened in a dimly lit inn.

🍻Judging from the chalk marks on the back wall, each indicating a drink ordered from the innkeeper, it's been a long night.

😬And not only that, but the player at right has just realized that his five of hearts has lost to his helmeted opponent's ace.

While this scene is European, it gives us a sense of what New Amsterdam (the Dutch settlement that would become NYC) was like. Soldiers, like the one here, would also be a familiar site: authorities repeatedly tried to curb rowdiness and drinking in the settlement.
