Gabriel García Márquez’s international breakthrough came with the novel 'Cien años de soledad' (1967) ('One Hundred Years of Solitude'). He is one of the foremost interpreters of magical realism in literature, a genre in which the framework narrative is set in a real place and time, but supernatural and dreamlike elements are part of the portrayal.
The novels 'El otoño del patriarca' (1975) ('The Autumn of the Patriarch') and 'El amor en los tiempos del colera' (1985) ('Love in the Time of Cholera') cemented his position as one of the greatest Latin American writers of all time.

- Maria Ressa awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.
Ressa was awarded the peace prize alongside Dmitry Muratov for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace. They are representatives for all journalists who stand up for this ideal in a world in which democracy and freedom of the press face increasingly adverse conditions.

MARIA RESSA has won the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.
She is a fellow journalist and a fellow Filipino.

Hear Maria Ressa’s reaction when she hears the news from Olav Njølstad, Secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, on being awarded the 2021 just before the public announcement. "I'm speechless!"
