Thank you to Resident Commissioner Jennifer Gonzalez, PR Governor Pedro Pierluisi, and the leaders representing the communities of the Caño (including G8 President Lucy Cruz and ENLACE Director Mario Núñez) for inviting EPA to be part of this historic announcement.
“EPA was very happy to hear of the new funding to support the 8 communities of the Caño Martin Peña. These communities’ perseverance has resulted in real victories for the health and well-being of its people, including this latest infusion of much needed money to do the dredging and cleanup work that is needed in the channel,” said Lisa F. Garcia, EPA Region 2 Administrator. “The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides transformative opportunities to address serious environmental and health disparities with engagement at all levels of government and in close partnership with those who know the issues best – people who live and work in communities like the Caño Martin Peña.”

To provide a safe route through Woodhull Dam on the Little River in Riverhead, Peconic Estuary Partnership and other partners began construction on a nearly $1 million fish passage 🐟.
This important project will help restore river herring habitat and foster sustainable populations of fish species that are vital to a healthy and productive Peconic River.
Last week, we joined the City of Gloversville, New York - City Hall in a fantastic community event to discuss opportunities for neighborhood revitalization using our EPA brownfields funding they received in 2019.
