Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson, & Union Counties, NJ

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson, & Union Counties, NJ Big Brothers Big Sisters is the nation's premier mentoring organization supporting one-to-one relationships with children in need. Mentor Today!
(11)

Donate Today! Visit www.BigsAndKids.org for more info. Big Brothers Big Sisters has been working in Newark since 2000. In April, 2008, it was reconstituted with new leadership, a new board and a new name, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson & Union Counties, covering those three counties in addition to just Newark with an increased emphasis on growing programs in Jersey City. We inherited an organization serving 116 youth and have grown to serve over 1,000 youth to date! We maintain a 1:1 ratio of youth to trained mentors and target the neediest populations in the area. We serve youth age 5-18 that are prone to delinquency due to the prevalence of risk factors (e.g. high crime neighborhood, incarcerated parent, single-parent home, delinquency history, mental health problems, poverty, poor peer and familial relationships, school problems, etc.). Currently, of the youth that BBBS serves 90% receive free or reduced lunch, 91% don’t live in a two parent home (raised by single parents, grandparents or foster homes), 76% are African-American and 12% are Latino.

Mission: To help children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with measureable impact

New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC)

Happening now. A critical conversation by our partners New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) , PSE&G and New Jersey Institute for Social Justice

This event, a part of NJPAC’s PSEG True Diversity Film Series, looks at the effort to reform police through the PBS Frontline Documentary Policing the Police 2020 — and talk about the issue with a panel including a police officer, a victim of over-policing, and community leaders.
This panel is moderated by Newark native William Simpson, a Senior Strategist at Equal Justice USA, who has worked with communities around the country in building healing responses to trauma and addressing racial equity through organizing and advocacy. With our panelists, he leads a discussion about potential reforms to address police use of excessive force, alternatives to traditional law enforcement, and other aspects of the current debate.
Our panelists:
Jason Maurice Dotson, a project manager at Newark’s Pride Center and a licensed clinical therapist for at-risk children.
Aqeela Sherrills, the Director of the non-profit Newark Community Street Team, Mayor Baraka’s community-based violence reduction initiative. For the past three years, Aqeela has also worked with Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice.
Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, the 14th Colonel of the New Jersey State Police. He has served more than 25 years with the New Jersey State Police, and previously served as its Deputy Superintendent of Operations overseeing nearly 1,800 troopers.
Linda McDonald Carter, an Associate Professor and Director of the Paralegal Studies Program at Essex County College, who grew up in the Scudder Housing Project in Newark’s Central Ward. She formed one of the first and largest New Jersey law firms led by African-American women, Jersey, Richardson, Stephens, Powell and Carter LLC.

Founded in 1995, The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (Bro/Sis) provides comprehensive, holistic and long-term support services to youth who range in age from eight to twenty-two. Bro/Sis offers wrap around evidence-based programming. The organization focuses on issues such as leadership development and educational achievement, sexual responsibility, sexism and misogyny, political education and social justice, Pan-African and Latinx history, and global awareness. Bro/Sis provides four-six year rites of passage programming, thorough five day a week after school care, school and home counseling, summer camps, job training and employment, college preparation, community organizing training, and international study programs to Africa, the Caribbean and South America.
Bro/Sis is unique in that we are locally based, yet with a national reach as we are: an evidence-based program that serves young people from economically poor communities and are seen as a model for the nation; we organize and advocate for social change; and we publish curricula and educate and train educators across the nation on our model.

Celebrating our COO Michele Williers!

While her announced departure is with mixed emotions, we are happy for Michele as she pursues a life change with her family. For those that know Michele admire her tireless advocacy efforts for her son, Beck, and so it's fitting that after 12 years with our organization, Michele will leave us to lead a special needs advocacy organization in Colorado.
Cheering Michele along as she starts a new chapter!

When these right-wing, neo-con, smart-bombing- wherever, war-mongers, ask us, "(B)uddy, what about you guys killing each other?!.." Civilized Savage gods (CSG) is dedicated to being part of the solution. Of course Black Lives Matter, but we (righteous/sane people) need to do our collective all to put God's Presence into that split second of evil indiscretion. We know for an Actual Fact that God is Well Able to get between that finger and that trigger- even when that trigger is dis-porportionately Black or Brown ("Super-Predators", "Urban Youth", "Gang Bangers" "Thugs"...) Civilized Savage gods (CSG) pledge to do our humble part to help curb this "epidemic" of sickening gun violence in America...Straight talk, brah, we're pointing with dirty hands. A real man always thinks of the long-term implications of his actions. They say, shooting incidents have decreased by 28% through the first two months of 2018 in Chicago!! .. Homicide rate in New York for 2017 was lowest in 70 years!! Los Angeles homicides down 6% in 2017 too..Keep prayin' it safe.. NO MORE, "US KILLING US.." PASS IT ON, PLEASE NO CURSING/ ALL FAITHS (brief video clip) STOP THE KILLING!! (LONG LIVE FARRAKHAN!) Produced by CSG Music Group (#csgmusicgroup..[email protected])
