Lots to say/share about this one. The last time this barn was stained the person/company ran buckwild with it and left marks all over from the pressure washer.. (More on this in a lil bit).
We used Cabot Australian Timber Oil (Natural) to restore the wood and provide lasting protection. 13 gallons absorbed in to the thirsty wood.
Now, back to the powerwashing. I have teamed up with T&T Powerwashing for several jobs of mine to get them ready for paint/stain. They are not just a guy with a truck and pressure washer. I hope everyone is having a great start to the New Year.
Just finished up this repair. Sewer pipe failed and caused a bit of damage.
This house has 3 life stages. The original part was built in the 1700's, the area where the repair was needed was added on in the 1850's. The last part, where I did more repairs, was built in the 1980's.

Wow!!!
It's been almost 2 months since I've posted. I've been busy with both work and life. I hope all of you are well.
I'm looking forward to sharing more projects with you this year.
My tip/advice for you this year: Make sure you're on the same page with regards to expectations with your contractor. Ask questions, even if it seems silly. Too much communication is better than no communication.

Teamed up with homeowners to achieve their goal of doing away with the basement hopper windows. I put spray foam around the perimeter of the window. Followed that up with filling the space with insulation. Framed out the openings. Covered the entire wall with 3/8" drywall (to match the depth of the mirrors).
Finished the drywall (tape and mud).
Painted that side of the basement with Sherwin Williams Duration matte, Rhinestone (SW 7656).
Work also included other repairs from electrical access.

Recent job that went very well despite having to scrape most of the existing coating off. Because so much of the previous coating was failing, I opted to go with Sherwin Williams Conflex (elastomeric coating) The color is SW 7548 Portico. For the tan wood areas, I used SW Duration-flat also tinted to Portico.
The shutters were painted with SW Duration-satin finish. Tinted to match the front door. I used exterior wood primer first on all wood surfaces.
I spent more than a full day just scraping.
Exterior painting season is nearing the end. So, if you miss this season, get ahead and plan for Spring.

Public Service Announcement my peeps.
3 things found on this job that lead to wood rot and costly repairs. All could have been prevented.
1: no drip edge installed by the roofers.
2: gutters were not set properly (angled to the downspout).
3: gutters were clogged with debris.

As we approach the Fall season and leaves filling your gutters, do yourself a favor and check to make sure your gutters are clear and properly installed. Don't fall victim to unnecessary repairs.

This was just a small part of the job recently. Rarely is a job straight forward. The Harvest Gold was everywhere/in places it shouldn't have been. Interior spine of the door, weather strips and hinges.
What I used: Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond Primer (tinted to P5). I opted to go with 2 coats of primer on the railings as they were pretty worn after scraping and sanding. Topcoated the door and railings with Sherwin Williams Emerald Rain Refresh, tinted to Tricorn Black - satin finish(2 coats). The door frame and roof supports were painted with Sherwin Williams Duration - satin finish.
3+ hours was spent just on prep.

Spent a couple hours with this door today. Years of getting hammered by the sun, poor paint jobs in the past and even drywall compound to fill in dents.
Most of the old paint scraped off. Only had to sand the edges.
I wish I'd taken a picture before I started on it. You can see a little bit of the old red color on the weather strip at the bottom.

Do you know what the chalk test is when referring to exterior paint coatings? No? Not to worry. One easy way to check your exterior paint coatings is to rub your hand across the surface. If you get a chalky residue on your hand, that coating is failing. Next to fail is actual surface. Get ahead of costly repairs and paint sooner rather than later. Remember, exterior paint is not only for aesthetics, but preservation of your home/deck/fence etc.
