are horrified by the shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, as members of the Jewish community gathered to observe Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.
Jews must be able to gather in prayer and community without fear, and we urge authorities to fully investigate this attack and hold those responsible accountable.
As we learn more details, we pray for the full and speedy recovery of those injured, and thank the heroic law enforcement officer who engaged the shooter and sustained injuries.
We stand in solidarity with the Belleville Jewish community at this deeply painful moment, and will never back down on our fulfilling community’s security needs.

Sandy Koufax wasn’t the first Jewish baseball star to sit out a game because of a Jewish holiday, but his refusal to play became a particular point of pride for American Jews.
Koufax’s refusal to play on the Day of Atonement, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, became a major point of pride for American Jews, who saw that it was possible to live in two cultures at once.

This High Holy Day season, we pause to reflect not only on the year ahead, but on who we are called to be.
The challenges before us are real. But so is our strength, our responsibility, and our ability to respond together.
As One, we choose hope.
As One, we choose community.
As One, we choose the future.
Shanah Tovah.
