Who carved it? Fowle or Lamsons.
One of my favorite gravestones I have ever worked on is that of Sarah McKean and her daughter in Ipswich, Massachusetts.
The touching detail of the baby
It looks a lot like the work of Robert Fowle who the Nason Stone in York, Maine is attributed to. The Farber collection says it is the Lamsons.
Erected in memory of
Mrs SARAH McKEAN Wife of
Mr WILLIAM McKEAN & DAUr of Jos MANNING
who departed this life May 15th 1776,
Ætatis 33.
How loved how Valued, once avails the not,
To whom related, or by whom begot,
A heap of dust alone Remains of the,
Tis all thou art and all the Proud shall be.
Survey this well ye fair ones and belive
The grave may terrify but can't deceive,
Yet Vertue still against decay can arm
And even lend mortality a Charm.
