Congratulations to these two outstanding students on winning our business math competition at Newcastle Middle School!

For 5 years, we have partnered with Mr. Smith’s 8th grade math class to do an end of year, 2 class period program where students separate into “companies” and are challenged to bid a job similar to how local construction companies do. To win the competition, they have to submit the lowest bid, meet a certain profit margin, and cover a minimum cost threshold. Our goal has been to make this as real-life as possible and help teach the students to organize data into factual analysis while teaching principles of business along the way.

Special thanks to Mr. Smith, and Principal Bartlett of Newcastle Middle School for the years of partnership and to That Embroidery Place in Gillette for making the shirts for the winners!

We’re almost there! Just FIVE more school days next week and we’ll wrap up another successful year at NMS. Before we get to all that, please make sure that your child has turned in their library books, sports uniforms, etc. before school ends next Friday. We’ll also be turning in laptops next Monday and Tuesday and cleaning lockers next Tuesday as well (please send bags to bring everything home that day!).

Wednesday, May 20th will be our 8th grade trip to Outlaw Ranch. We will leave as soon as we can after morning attendance and will not be back until 4:30 that afternoon. So, morning buses will be fine but please have a plan for transportation home from school when we get back. Mrs. Beehler has sent out lots of information, so please check for more details on what to wear, what to bring, and what that fun day entails for our 8th graders.

On Thursday, May 21st, qualifying students will go to Flight Zone as part of our WYTOPP Incentive Day. Students can choose to stay back if they’d prefer since we’ll be having fun activities here that day (including a swimming party), but if students are going to Flight Zone, they must have a waiver filled out by their parent or guardian. I emailed a copy of the waiver to all students who qualified, we have hard copies in the office, or you can complete the waiver online here: https://flightzonewy.com/waiver/. Students have the option to pack their lunch to Flight Zone or sign up for a sack lunch from the school. They are also welcome to bring money for snacks and arcade games while we’re at Flight Zone.

And Friday, May 22nd is our last day of school. Students and staff will dress up nice for the last day to celebrate AND to be ready for our Awards Assembly that begins at 12:30pm in Crouch Auditorium that day. At the conclusion of the assembly, we will dismiss students and say goodbye to the 25-26 school year!

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out. Otherwise have a great weekend, and we’ll see everyone next week for the last days of school!

The last NMS dance of the year takes place tonight. 8th graders & their families are invited at 6pm, while the 6th and 7th grade students can join us at 6:30. Please plan on using the Dogie Dome doors for drop-off and pick-up and be sure to have a plan for getting home as soon as the dance ends at 8pm.

Our track & field athletes will travel to Hulett tomorrow to compete for district championships and try to break even more school records! The bus leaves at 6am. Go Calves!

Next week we should have enough data from the WYTOPP ELA tests to determine who has qualified for the Flight Zone on May 21st. We’ll also start solidifying plans for the fun activities here that day for those that didn’t qualify or choose to stay behind.

Before all that, we have a busy week ahead! The 6th grade Greek Plays will be on Monday at 6pm in the auditorium. We’ll also have Women in Science at Black Hills State University next Wednesday, along with a fun day of activities for boys organized by Ms. Manders and Dr. Colgrove, the 8th Grade Triathlon on Thursday, and the District Art Show to wrap up the week.

Please reach out if you have any questions. Otherwise, mark your calendars and have a great weekend!

The End of the Year NMS Dance is this Friday, May 8th!

Use the Dogie Dome doors in the high school parking lot for drop-off and pick-up.

As always, students must attend school on Friday to attend the dance, and the dance is for NMS students only.

8th graders (and their families) only from 6 to 6:30pm on Friday. Great chance for parents/grandparents/siblings to come join, take pictures, etc. before the “Special Someone” Dance at 6:20.

At the conclusion of the Special Someone dance, adults can head out and the 6th and 7th graders can come into the building and join us for the remainder of the dance. This means 6th and 7th graders should not be here until 6:30pm.

The dance ends at 8pm sharp, so please have a specific plan for getting home right away.

Law enforcement has confirmed the call today was a swatting hoax. They have determined we can exit the lockout and resume business as usual including scheduled activities such as MS soccer and the K-2 music concert. Out of an abundance of caution, there will continue to be increased law enforcement presence in the community and at school activities.

WCSD #1 and other school districts in Wyoming have received some concerning phone calls likely tied to a possible “swatting incident.” All 3 buildings have entered a lock in to ensure safety and security for students and staff. Law enforcement is on site managing the situation. Classes are continuing as usual. We will pass on more information as it becomes available.

Shoutout to our 6th & 7th graders who tackled the WYTOPP reading test this week! Next week they’ll finish up WYTOPP testing in math class while our 8th graders will get started with two of their three testing dates.

Next Wednesday, April 29th, Mrs. Munger’s 7th grade social studies students invite you all to “Colonial Night” at NMS from 4 to 5:30pm. Students will be turning our middle school classrooms into the thirteen original American colonies, and they’d love to share what they’ve learned about the hardships early colonists endured, the games they played, and even the food they ate. Tickets to sample food will be on sale for 10 cents each in front of the NMS library (some samples may cost more than one ticket), and proceeds from the sales become the first deposit in the Class of 2031’s Prom account. Please use the HS parking lot and Dogie Dome doors to join us that evening.

May is just around the corner, so PLEASE check out the “FUTURE DATES” and the May calendar to see just how busy and crazy things are going to get… have a great weekend!

😳 Believe it or not, we are over halfway through Quarter 4 and getting closer and closer to the end of the school year! Students will be bringing their midterm report cards home today, which serve as a snapshot of where students are at with just five weeks left to go until summer vacation! There is plenty of time to get their grades up, and some scores may have already changed since we printed the report cards. Encourage your child to keep working hard and to check in with teachers if they need help.

🙌🏼Huge shoutout to our 7th grade students who got the WYTOPP fun started this week with the writing test. They worked hard, and we managed to get everyone tested without having any makeup tests since everyone did great with attendance and communication. THANK YOU!

✅ Next week our 6th graders will jump in with the reading test on Tuesday and Wednesday, and our 7th graders will wrap up ELA testing with the reading test on Thursday, April 23rd. Our 6th & 7th graders will be math testing April 28th – 30th while our 8th graders have three tests to take (math, ELA, and science) on April 28th, 30th, and May 5th. Thanks for continuing to support your child and their efforts with these arduous tests. As always, please reach out with questions or concerns!

⚽️ 🏃🏽‍♂️ Activities are picking up as well. Our girls and boys soccer teams host Scottsbluff tomorrow morning beginning at 11am with another track meet scheduled for next Tuesday after the meet in Belle Fourche was cancelled today. Basketball open gym opportunities also continue with Coach Smith each Monday evening from 6 to 7:30pm in the MS gym.

📆 Here’s the full slate for next week, plus lots of dates to have on your calendar as things get busier and busier in April and May!
