At last week’s work session, we discussed the city’s Stormwater Management Plan and how it intersects with Newport News’ Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, which aims to improve walking and biking connectivity across the city. Engineering will compile a list of streets where these challenges exist in an effort to balance effective stormwater management with safe and accessible pedestrian routes.

Are there streets in Newport News you avoid walking or biking because of open ditches on narrow roads? If so, which ones?

At my first meeting as a member of the Virginia Statewide Community Land Trust, I learned that community land trusts can be a powerful tool not only for affordable housing, but also for revitalizing neighborhoods.

I’m looking forward to exploring how this opportunity can benefit Newport News and partnering with organizations like Habitat for Humanity to expand pathways to homeownership.

Great conversation at the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, where I represent the City of Newport News. A presentation on the state of our regional economy highlighted how retiring seniors and slower population growth are creating a major workforce challenge nationwide. There are now more jobs than available workers.

An important shift discussed was that cities are no longer just competing to attract jobs; they are now competing to attract people. My three takeaways: continue investing in targeted workforce development to support existing employers to retain major employment centers, refine zoning and permitting processes to encourage redevelopment of blighted properties into mixed-use spaces (commercial and residential use), and start building recreational and entertainment districts that improve quality of life to help attract residents and talent.

As we continue planning for the future of our region, I’d love to hear from residents. What does improving quality of life look like to you?

Safe neighborhoods and strong businesses go hand in hand. I appreciated joining the Newport News Police Department and local business leaders for an important conversation on public safety, crime prevention, and strengthening partnerships across our community. Thank you to everyone working proactively to keep Newport News safe and business-friendly.

Great turnout at the Habitat for Humanity Home Repair Blitz. Hampton and Newport News came together to help repair 12 homes in our community. These improvements do more than restore houses — they help spark revitalization across 12 neighborhoods.

Another great example of organizations and volunteers rolling up their sleeves to help rebuild and strengthen our community.
