You'll have to excuse the rough appearance, working working working.

But I needed to say something. I know I'm not out here beating the campaign drum yet. There will be time for that. But I'm going to start with direct engagement. I'm gonna talk right to that camera and directly to you as much as I can.

The incumbent wants you to believe that you should be afraid. That if you put me in office, I'm gonna bring radical left policies into play that are going to compromise the value of this community. But that's not true.

The truth is, I want the same thing everybody else does. I want the life we've been promised.

My opponent might gloat about $1 billion saved for Kansans, but are you feeling that in your pockets? Or are you feeling the never-ending increase in fees, insurance, utilities, groceries?

So what does fear mongering us and telling us that some radical democrat, nominated in secret dark rooms, paid by big left money actually do .... it keeps us from solving those problems.

So if I'm elected I'm going to fight as hard as I can to restore something that works. A government that fights for and serves the people. Not corporations. Not special interest group groups.

And I'm going to fight the division. No more fear mongering. It's time to bring integrity back to our government. It's time to actually restore community.

It was a privilege to better introduce myself this evening. I look forward to many conversation as we move towards the general election. It's a long road ahead but I know that momentum, true momentum, takes time to build. So as we build our campaign and our network of volunteers, any interested parties feel free to reach out!

True engagement, not cookie cutter politics, is what's gonna get us through to the finish line!!!

Thank you 🙏

Matt Smith, who is a Newtonian through and through, speaks at tonight’s meeting who is running against Avery Anderson. Matt is worried about the expensive housing crisis that drives up property taxes by private firms and costs for buyers. He also wants to begin to talk about the trades for students as well as regular education support.

We need someone to represent our area, and lately we feel like that isn’t happening.

Messaging for everyday Kansans:

Our government state/federal spends wildly.

Holding Topeka accountable.

Conceding that we need someone who can reach across the aisle.

Gun rights: we need safety classes, education, education.

Fiscal responsibility.

Holding adult predators accountable. Anyone and everyone no matter who.

Avery and Matt are opposite ends of the spectrum. One is a suit, one is tshirt and jeans like most Newtonians. Matt is in the trades, working class, he has character, and wants the best for Hv Co!!

Looking forward to it!

Seems silly doesn't it

...being bothered a candidate is using technology that our government has invested billions of dollars into? What is currently propping up our entire stock market? ...Investment in AI technology infrastructure and science.

Its what makes this country great and I intend to embrace it.

I think AI is going to be here whether or not some like it. As a consequence, It's going to be necessity that we implement strong regulation, rules of engagement, etc. When I'm elected I will work with Kansas's to learn their concerns about data centers, environmental impacts and all of the things that come along with AI. Making sure that big tech is responsible with the data they obtained from us!

But challenging somebody's abilities based on their use of ChatGPT, that's just downright goofy... 🤷‍♂️

Let’s be honest—Harvey County doesn’t need more politics. It needs representation.

My name is Matt Smith, and I’m running for Kansas House District 72 because I’ve spent the last two decades living the same reality most people here are facing.

I didn’t come up through a political system. I came up through work—long days, tight margins, and real responsibility. I built a business here, not on connections or favors, but by showing up and earning trust one customer at a time.

That gives you a different perspective.

When you’ve been inside thousands of homes, you hear the truth. You see what rising costs actually do to families. You understand what it means when a paycheck doesn’t stretch far enough, or when one unexpected expense throws everything off.

That’s the gap I’m running to close.

Because too often, decisions are being made by people who are disconnected from the day-to-day lives of the people they represent. And when that happens, the results show up in higher costs, missed priorities, and a growing frustration that nothing really changes.

I’m not interested in playing the same red vs. blue game. That hasn’t solved anything for the people I talk to every day.

What I’m focused on is simple:

Making it easier for working families to get ahead

Supporting local businesses instead of outside interests

Expanding trade and career paths that actually lead somewhere

Bringing practical, grounded decision-making back into government

This campaign isn’t about ideology—it’s about reality.

If you want someone who understands this community because they’ve worked in it, built in it, and lived in it… I’m asking for your support.

Matthew Smith – Candidate for Kansas House District 72

Matthew Smith is a small business owner, HVAC technician, and longtime resident of Harvey County running for the Kansas House of Representatives in District 72.

Matthew was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and grew up in the Chicago suburbs before his family moved to Kansas in the mid-1990s. He made Harvey County his permanent home in 2002. After leaving high school early, Matthew earned his high school equivalency in 1998 and later completed technical training at WTI in 2006, beginning a career in the skilled trades.

Matthew started his HVAC career with Graber Plumbing & Heating, a respected local family business where he worked for many years before launching his own company, Cool Guy HVAC, in 2020. What began as a necessity during the uncertainty of the pandemic has grown into a small local business employing four people and serving customers throughout the region.

Over the past two decades Matthew has worked in homes and businesses across Harvey County and the surrounding communities. His customers include families, small businesses, churches, restaurants, and commercial operations. Through his work, Matthew has seen firsthand the wide range of challenges people face and believes everyone deserves respect and service regardless of background or circumstance.

Matthew and his company regularly support the community by donating labor and services where possible, including work for Harvey County parks, churches, and local organizations such as the Salvation Army. He has also supported local youth activities, including sponsorship of community recreation programs and swim teams.

Matthew married his wife in September of 2025 and together they are raising three children. Outside of work he enjoys a wide range of hands-on hobbies including hydroponic gardening, aquariums, chemistry, and 3-D printing.

Raised with strong values of integrity, responsibility, and service to others, Matthew believes those principles should guide public leadership. His campaign is focused on practical solutions for Kansas communities: rebuilding infrastructure, expanding skilled-trade training, addressing housing challenges, and making sure state resources are reinvested back into the communities that generate them.

Matthew believes representation means listening to and serving everyone in the district, regardless of political party or whether they voted for him. His goal is simple: bring real-world experience, accountability, and a focus on community back to state government.
