The City of Niceville received an Excellence Award for Public Education Efforts from the 2024 Florida Stormwater Association at this year’s annual conference in Ft Myers. GIS analyst Samantha Hanson and Director of IT Robert Jenkins accepted the award on behalf of the City.

The FSA’s Excellence award recognizes outstanding or innovative stormwater public education or social marketing efforts, by the public or academic sectors, that reach target audiences and elicit behavior changes that reduce stormwater pollution sources.

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who make the Adopt A Drain program possible. To date, 240 lbs of debris have been collected and 59 drains have been adopted.

Don’t leaf me this way! Be sure to use the right tool for the job when you tidy up the leaves clogging your storm drain. Rakes, shovels, and brooms can all come in handy. Also, as you’re doing yard work this fall, keep leaves and grass clippings out of the street or the ditch before they become a pollutant. Yard debris can contribute to the loss of water clarity. As they break down, they produce nutrients that feed algae and turn the water green.

Adopt-a-Drain asks residents to adopt a storm drain in their neighborhood and keep it clear of leaves, trash, and other debris to reduce water pollution.
Volunteer fifteen minutes, twice a month, for cleaner waterways and healthier communities. Storm drains flow directly to local lakes, rivers, wetlands, springs and the Gulf of Mexico, acting as a conduit for trash and organic pollutants.

Happy Earth Day! Did you know storm drains feed directly into our local rivers and wetlands, unfiltered? That’s why it’s so important to adopt a drain and keep them clear for cleaner and healthier water.

Here’s how easy it is:
1. Find a drain to adopt near you
2. Name your drain. Bonus points for fun or creative drain names!
3. Take a few minutes to clean up the street and sidewalk near your drain if needed. Dispose of the debris properly
4. Report the amount you collect on your Adopt-A-Drain account
5. Repeat as necessary, we recommend about 2X/month

You can make a difference! Every little bit helps. Thank you for helping keep Niceville Nice.
