The Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continuous military campaign in World War II, pitted U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, and Allied merchant convoys and warships against the German submarine force and surface units in the Atlantic area of operations from 1939 until 1945.
Merchant convoys in the Atlantic were essential to the Allied naval war efforts during WWII, and later in the war supported the build-up and sustainment of U.S. forces in the European theater of operations.
Pictured above, USS Roper (DD-147) escorts a merchant convoy in the background from Hampton Roads, Virginia, in 1942.
Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet and Commander, Submarine Forces hosted a Junior Officer Undersea Warfare Symposium and Training (JOUST) event aboard Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, May 1-5.
The five-day symposium brought together 90 junior officers (JOs) from multiple warfare communities across the fleet from the U.S., U.K. and Canada in a collective forum to align knowledge, skillsets, strategy and tactics, discuss undersea warfare capabilities and doctrine and provide JOs a direct line of communication to leaders in the undersea warfare (USW) community.

that Submarine Group Two was originally known as Submarine Flotilla Two? Initially established in 1965 at Naval Submarine Base New London, in Groton, Connecticut, Submarine Flotilla Two was formally re-designated as Submarine Group Two in the mid-1970s.
Submarine Group Two originally served as a squadron commander and administrative coordinator of submarines, to include training and maintenance, for Submarine Squadron Two, Submarine Squadron 10, Submarine Squadron 14 and Submarine Development Group Two.
In 2014, the U.S. Navy disestablished Submarine Group Two, and previously assigned units, assets and personnel were redistributed across the force as needed until September 30th, 2019, when Submarine Group Two was re-established at Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, in Norfolk, Virginia.

MONTEREY, CA.- Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) hosts Undersea Warfare Commands to discuss Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC) data and information flow to the submarine community.
“A deep understanding of the environment is critical for effectiveness at sea, said CAPT Christi Montgomery, Commanding Officer of FNMOC. “Assured and timely access to the environmental data and information produced by Naval Oceanography not only provides that understanding, but also allows warfighting decision makers the ability to adapt faster than an adversary, and increases own-force maneuverability and lethality.”
Discussions focused on reviewing the current posture of submarine tactical use of the ocean environment to identify gaps and areas of improvement for Naval Oceanography support from production centers and operational commands. Virtual and on-site participants included members of Naval Oceanography , the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO), the Naval Oceanography Operations Command (NOOC), the U. S. Pacific and Atlantic Fleet, Submarine Force, Submarine Group Two , Fleet Theater Undersea Warfare Commands, and the Undersea Warfighting Development Center.
“As we move forward, it is paramount that the METOC community and Submarine community continue to collaborate and find unique solutions for data delivery,” said CDR Newman, Oceanographer of COMSUBPAC. “Meteorological and oceanographic information are crucial to maintaining dominance within the undersea domain.”
FNMOC, a subordinate command of Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, operates one of the largest single supercomputing facilities in the DoD, dedicated to environmental prediction. Consisting of a ready Force of well-qualified, STEM-educated and scientifically trained Sailors, civilians and contractors serving in a wide-range of technical, scientific and service support billets in Monterey, California and Stennis Space Center, Mississippi.
