Our HCA teachers had an AWESOME 1st day back! They spent the morning exploring the ITEEA STEM STELs, diving deeper into our 2021-2022 theme, and coding with Meet Edison as well as gearing up for back to school night/open house.
The afternoon was focused on an ALL HCA STAFF team building with a STEAM theme at the Escape Room LoCo! One of our teams, “HCA Express” set the record for “breaking out”!
We can’t wait to see our scholars and introduce this year’s theme! Stay tuned…

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Our HCA students are engaged and inspired! Hillsboro Charter Academy has earned the 2020-21 PLTW - Project Lead The Way Distinguished School for our Launch School program. We are 1 out of 3 in the state of Virginia!

When our school opened in 2016, HCA was awarded a grant to use PLTW Launch to spark our STEAM curriculum. It has provided us with a framework for success during our E3 (Explore! Engage! Engineer!) time by giving our school common language with the PLTW Design Process. Since the Launch Program's initial purpose as our siloed STEAM curriculum, we have grown the program to supplement science instruction in Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade, while continuing to foster creativity and extensions in E3 throughout the school (K-5). We LOVE the flexibility and fun that it provides to our scholars. Our school would not be where it is today without the initial structure of the PLTW Launch Curriculum.

Fun Fact: This year we have a record number of staff attending this conference! 14 faculty members! All of our K-5 teachers, all of our Specialists and all of our TAs! Even during COVID, PD is a priority and the secret to our instructional success! We have even planned our school calendar around this conference in early February and HCA has scheduled PD days so that our teachers can focus on LEARNING and bringing it back to our classrooms! We also have spread our instructional knowledge by teaching sessions as well!

Social distancing and mitigation strategies didn’t stop our Annual Gingerbread House Engineering. Our second graders at HCA continued the holiday tradition today with some new procedures in place. Scholars first worked on the engineering skill of creating an orthographic projection of a milk carton. The scholars read and learned about the history of using Gingerbread, designed the house using orthographic sketching techniques and then brought it all to life with creating an actual house using graham crackers as the gingerbread, icing as the glue and candy as the decorations. Each piece of candy was carefully drawn on the sketch and then placed in the model. Miss Miranda Meadows and Mrs. Megan Tucker worked with the scholars in different parts of this integrated study. The kids did a great job of using the edible materials as tools to create the physical model! It was awesome to see authentic prototype modeling in action!

Engineers Week - EWeek

What an AMAZING DAY! Our HCA scholars, families and Hillsboro community members came out to support HCA at 515am this morning for the NBC Washington Morning Show segment; Introduce a Girl Engineering Day as part of Engineers Week - EWeek!
All of our scholars did a STELLAR job and showed the greater DMV how AWESOME HCA really is! The kids powered through the day and worked hard at the Civil Engineering Design Challenges in E3. To cap off our day, Girls in GEAR hosted the Boys & BOTS Design Challenge this afternoon! The boys did an FABULOUS job of engineering a tool to clear the “snow” and the girls did a FANTASTIC job of facilitating!!!

A discussion of engineering literacy from AE3.
Question. How does one find out their membership Number? I am having issues finding this information.
I just realized we have 5 former VTEEA presidents on the current board of directors and 5 former presidents as Committee chairs (some overlap). I also predict we will have 7 presidents on next year's board of directors. Strong leadership or few folks wish to serve?
I think there are two aspects of engineering education. For one there is the technical side which is taught well in many schools and universities. On the other hand there are the non-technical aspects like motivation, learning techniques, work organization and planning, technical writing, presentation skills, and health aspects. These aspects are rarely taught, if at all. But these things are important contributors to excellence. To probe the further check out
