On Dec. 6, 1941, a Virginian-Pilot photographer captured a photo of Christmas shoppers on Granby Street from a building across the street from the W. T. Grant Department Store.

They had no idea in a few short hours events in the Pacific would bring unimaginable changes to the lives of Americans and the world.

🍁🍂 Fall in love with our spaces. ❤️

Slover Library blends traditional library functions with contemporary resources and services. Our building encompasses three centuries of architecture: The historic Seaboard building (the 1800s), the Selden Arcade (1900s), and a modern six-story tower that connects them all. At 138,000 square feet across seven floors, we're a destination for weddings, corporate parties, military celebrations, press conferences, and other special events for groups of up to 250.

We also work with a list of preferred caterers, all offering cuisine infused with local flavor to make your event stand out.

Schedule a tour TODAY, and plan to host your next event at the Slover. For additional info, visit sloverlibrary.com/events.

Thursday, Dec. 1 | 5:30–7:30 p.m. | Slover Library | Room 650

Seats are filling up! JOIN US at Slover Library for a book talk and signing with Author Margaret Edds. Registration is encouraged at https://bit.ly/AuthorMargaretEdds.

Presented by the Slover Library Foundation, Edds will discuss her book, What the Eyes Can’t See: Ralph Northam, Black Resolve, and a Racial Reckoning in Virginia.

Edds provides a revealing examination of race in the nation, how racism might be addressed and reckoned with, and how we all may find a measure of redemption in listening to one another.

The program is FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and includes light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

About the book:
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s “blackface scandal” could have destroyed any politician. The photo of Governor Northam purportedly in blackface created a firestorm locally and in every political sphere.

What the Eyes Can’t See explains why Ralph Northam’s career did not end with the scandal and how it made him a better governor, citizen, and doctor.

Prodded by Black legislators and citizens, Northam came to a deeper understanding of the racism and pain the photograph symbolized. He listened and, more importantly, learned the lessons of endemic, systemic racism and applied those lessons to his legislative agenda.

Edds provides a revealing examination of race in the nation, how racism might be addressed and reckoned with, and how we all may find a measure of redemption in listening to one another.
