Check out the awesome work our Park Rangers did with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the students at Sherwood Forest Elementary!

The rangers are working with the kids to create a bioswale that'll help with the pooling of rainwater AND be used to start a rain garden at the school. 🌱💧

Our 2023 Youth in Government Conference was another HUGE success!

We brought over 100 local high school students into the conference where they got to attend breakout sessions led by several city departments about careers in public service and ask questions of city leaders including Danica Royster, Norfolk City Council about their professional and personal experiences in local government during a panel discussion.

The students also participated in a resource fair featuring vendors like the Elizabeth River Trail to discover how they could get involved in their communities through engaging with local agencies.

We hope each student who attended left more connected to local government, public service and the work that goes into making a great place to live and play!

We love hearing from our members about the amazing experiences they're having at our recreation centers!

Check out this testimonial we received from a Norfolk Fitness & Wellness Center:

"My name is William 'BillyBear' Childress. 2 years ago I started working out at the Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center with my son, Jeff. He had been trying to get me to join him at the NFWC for many years; he first joined the NFWC in 2008. He is 46 years old and has been working out for over 30 years. I myself recently turned 80 years old in January of 2023.

I am in great health and I believe that it is in large part due to the fact that I have been exercising at the NFWC for the past 2 years. My workout consists of strength training and cardio. I ride the recumbent bike for 5 miles on level 4. I utilize the arm bike and rowing machine as a part of my cardio routine as well. I do weight assisted pull-ups and tricep dips; the leg press, back extension, and ab crunch are some of my favorites.

I aim to get a full body workout each and every week. I am currently training for the upcoming 2023 Senior Olympics.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the staff of the NFWC, all of my NFWC friends and my son who inspire, encourage, and motivate me to be the best 80-year-old BillyBear I can be!" 👏

We're so thankful for every single one of our members and we hope you continue to with us! 😁

To close out our highlights of African-American sports heroes here in for Black History Month, we're featuring a former Norfolk Boxing student currently adding to the city's tapestry of champions: Keyshawn Davis! 🥊

Davis is making quite the impression two years into his professional boxing career with a 7-0 record and three silver medals in the 2019 Pan-American Games, the 2019 World Championships and, most recently, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. 🥈🥈🥈

Davis' hot start earned him the honor of 2022 Prospect of the Year from ESPN and acclaimed boxing magazine The Ring. 🏆

Even as Black History Month comes to a close, we hope you'll join us in continuing to celebrate the legacy of other African-American athletes from our city today and every day! 🤎

The Horace Downing Senior Center’s book club “Turning Pages” celebrated Black History Month last Friday with a special book signing and Q&A session with Julius Earl Ruffin. 📖✍️

Mr. Ruffin's story is the subject of the Autobiography “Why Me? When it Could’ve Been You!” by Author Magnolia Holiday. The book details how Ruffin spent two decades in prison after receiving a life sentence due to a false accusation until 2003, when he became the first of 13 men to be exonerated as a result of the testing of DNA evidence that had previously been withheld.

Thanks to everyone who came out and to Mr. Ruffin and his family for stopping by to share his story! 👏

We're highlighting our African-American sports heroes here in for and today, we're talking about the legendary Bruce Smith!

Smith's football legend began at Booker T. Washington High School and carried over to Virginia Tech, finishing his collegiate career with 46 sacks, two All-American selections and an Outland Trophy as the nation's top interior lineman. 🦃

After getting picked #1 overall by the Buffalo Bills in 1985, Smith proceeded to top his collegiate accolades with a Hall of Fame NFL career. Throughout his 18 years with the Bills and the Washington Redskins, Smith was named Defensive Player of the Year twice, received eight All-Pro selections, played in four consecutive Super Bowls and finished his career as the ONLY player with 200 sacks - a record that still stands as the most in NFL history. 🏆🥇

Smith's status as an all-time great was cemented after his playing days when he was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2009 and named to the NFL's 100th Anniversary Team in 2019.

Join us as we continue to celebrate his legacy and those of other African-American athletes from our city all month long! 🤎

02/13/2023

On the day following the Super Bowl, it's only right that the next athlete we celebrate this Black History Month is a Super Bowl champion himself. We're talking about Kam Chancellor! 👏

A two-sport athlete at Maury High School, Chancellor played quarterback and safety for the Commodores before settling on the defensive side of the ball at Virginia Tech. After being selected in the 5th round of the NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, Chancellor worked his way up to being a captain on the team and a crucial part of a legendary group of defenders that called themselves the Legion of Boom. 💥

In his eight NFL seasons, Chancellor was a four time Pro Bowler, a two time Second Team All-Pro and a member of the Seattle Seahawks team that won Super Bowl XLVIII in dominating fashion. 🏈🏆

Join us as we continue to celebrate his legacy and those of other African-American athletes from our city all month long! 🤎

We're highlighting our African-American sports heroes here in for and today, we're starting with Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker!

A Youngs Park native and Booker T. Washington High School graduate, Whitaker is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive boxers in history. In fact, acclaimed boxing magazine The Ring ranked Whitaker as the tenth greatest fighter of the last 80 years! 🥊💥

Whitaker's accolades in the sport speak for themselves, as he won championships across four different weight classes throughout his illustrious career and still holds the record for most unified championship bout wins and most consecutive unified title defenses in the lightweight division. 🏆

Whitaker was also a champion in the community in his post-boxing days, choosing to give back by mentoring the next generation of fighters - including current professional boxer Keyshawn Davis.

Join us as we continue to celebrate his legacy and those of other African-American athletes from our city all month long! 🤎

Please repaint the parking lines at the Haven Creek boat ramp. Cars without trailers are parking where they please and making it very hard for boaters to safely back their trailers down the ramp. The car-only parking spots should be revised so that the handicap spots take the first 2 regular spots eliminating the 2 current handicap spots closest to the ramp. This will allow boaters more room to maneuver safely. These pictures are from Sunday 11/29.
