Today is Ombudsman Appreciation Day!
September 14th is a day set aside for Navy personnel and families to show appreciation to command ombudsmen for their dedicated service to the Fleet, Fighter, and Family. This practice goes back to the inception of the program in 1970, when Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr. introduced the Navy Family Command Ombudsman Program via Z-Gram 24. For more than 50 years, the dedicated volunteers of this important program have been making a difference.
We would like to thank all of the Navy ombudsmen, and give a special shout out to our very own command ombudsman, Mrs. Whitney Wilson, for all of her support to our military families!

September is National Preparedness Month, so the Navy is taking the opportunity to encourage Sailors to “Take Control in 1, 2, 3” and ensure they have a plan to protect their family in an emergency, including vulnerable senior family members.
For many, it is not a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’ when an emergency will occur. Having a well thought-out plan that the whole family is familiar with can make your personal disaster response… well, less disastrous! Show your family you care and make a survival plan today: https://www.ready.gov/make-a-plan

These military members helped lighten the loads for Chesapeake Public Schools teachers by helping them set up their classrooms for the upcoming academic year.
This effort allowed the teachers to focus on other responsibilities related to planning, developing and organizing student instructional activities, and preparing for upcoming meet and greet events.
Military members volunteered at 24 different elementary, middle, and high schools in Chesapeake and three in Portsmouth during the initiative. Some of the tasks the volunteers helped with included painting the exterior of the schools, preparing bulletin boards, cleaning the school’s courtyard, sorting books, delivering chrome books to classrooms, moving bookshelves, and arranging furniture.
