On June 15, 1944, following intensive naval gunfire and carrier-based aircraft bombing, the Fifth Fleet's Task Force 52 lands the Marines on Saipan, which is the first relatively large and heavily defended land mass in the Central Pacific to be assaulted by US amphibious forces. Among the ships firing gun support were battleships USS Tennessee (BB-43) and USS California (BB-44). The island is secured on July 9.

Due to sleet/snow and expected freezing temperatures overnight into tomorrow morning, Naval Station Norfolk and Craney Island Fuel Depot will be on a 2-hour delay for Non-Essential Personnel, Friday morning, 6 March.

Mission Essential Personnel should report on time.

The use of liberal leave and teleworking should be considered. Personnel required to travel should allow extra time to arrive safely as city secondary roads may not be treated.

The Emergency Preparedness Brief scheduled for tomorrow morning at C-9 will still be held from 1030-Noon.

All personnel should continue to monitor local media outlets for updates.

Winter Storm Warning,

Naval Station Norfolk - The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Southeast Virginia and portions of interior Northeast North Carolina from 7pm tonight to 1pm Thursday. Accumulations: 3 to 6 inches of snow and sleet. A light ice accumulation of less than 0.1 inches is possible in North Carolina. Timing: snow, possibly mixed with rain at the onset, arrives by this evening then quickly transitions to all snow and becomes heavy at times overnight. The snow may mix with sleet and possibly freezing rain in North Carolina overnight. The precipitation is expected to taper off to light snow or mixed precipitation Thursday morning, with only minimal additional accumulation expected after 7 am.
