We were pleased to be able to take part in The Home Depot Foundation 's Operation Surprise yesterday at our local HBI location here in Norfolk.

A few weeks ago Habitat for Humanity International reached out to our offices to ask us to help select a veteran homeowner to honor with a gift from The Home Depot Foundation. We immediately thought a great way to tie in the amazing support @homedepotfoundation provides @hbibuildingcareers and further tie in our partnership with Home Builders Institute would be to select a young man who was one of the first graduates of the Norfolk HBI program and who worked alongside our construction staff on the build site.

David Corley help build with us back in 2019, as he was transitioning out of active duty. We helped give him some real life hands-on training in the construction trades. When David left the Navy in late 2019, he remained in the area and got a job as a generator technician and purchased his home in Portsmouth. We knew David would not only be able to use The Home Depot Foundation's generous surprise on his home, but it would also go a long way toward helping him purchase the tools he would need for his career in the skilled trades.

We were also pleased to accept an Award of Appreciation from HBI. We look forward to being able to provide training opportunities to transitioning active duty military members and veterans along HBI with for many years to come!

These are some very welcome sights to see at our offices today! J.D. Miles & Sons, Inc. has received enough of the roofing materials to start work on the section of roof at our offices on Tidewater Drive with the worst leaks.

We can't wait until @jdmilesandsons receives the remaining materials and are able to replace the whole roof so we can have #solarpower installed!

Habitat SHR is #goinggreener♻️ for the #environment and our community thanks your donations to help us replace the roof.

Thank you so much to Virginia Natural Gas for providing us with a grant for $10k dollars towards our construction program! @virginianaturalgas' funding will help us to be able to continue to provide hands on work experience to students from Home Builders Institute (HBI).

The local HBI (@hbibuildingcareers ) program trains transitioning active duty military members in the construction trades. We are proud to be able to partner with HBI and really appreciate Virginia Natural Gas' support of our program and to their commitment helping veterans find their second careers through training programs like those provided through HBI.

Earlier in September the Miller girls came out to see the progress on their new home on Randolph Street in Suffolk and picked out their rooms, so we snapped a photo of each in their future bedrooms. Last week, we filmed their virtual home dedication, and got to see how each girl had decorated their rooms, what a great opportunity to snap an after photo and share them side by side.

Both girls have decorated their rooms to fit their personalities perfectly. Abri even painted a chalkboard next to her bedroom door where she writes down her to do tasks for each day. Jazzmyn shows her love of art from friends and family.

How awesome is it, that they both now have their own rooms, done up in their own style, where they will be able to do their homework, spend time with friends and not have to worry about whether or not they will have to move when a lease runs out.

This is what we do at Habitat SHR, we work with low-income families to build affordable houses that they make into homes, where their children will always have a place to call their own.

This giving season, won't you please consider making your year end donation to Habitat SHR, so we are able make the dream of homeownership true for more families in our community? To donate: https://www.shrhabitat.org/donate

Our new volunteer coordinator, Alissa, conducted another construction volunteer orientation this evening. We love seeing new faces join us in our mission to build affordable housing with families that qualify to buy them.

Simply having a quiet place to do homework and a safe environment in which to play greatly benefits #children.

• 20% less likely to become teen parents
• 25% more likely to graduate from high school
• Twice as likely to graduate college

Your donation today, #GivingTuesday will help more families root in decent, safe and affordable homes, where they will grow beautiful ‘leaves’ that thrive.

On average our homebuyers have $400-$500 more each month after paying their mortgages, then they had when paying rent. This gives them spending power for better healthcare and healthier food.

It also allows them the opportunity to set aside money for emergencies making them stronger and better able to weather any "storm."

Help low-income families in South Hampton Roads put down strong roots and help break the cycle of generational poverty by making a donation today #GivingTuesday to support building affordable homes in our community.

This Thanksgiving we are #thankful that the Wilson family will be experiencing the first of many holidays in their new home. We are also thankful for all the Women Build Week participants and sponsors who helped fund their build.

And we're thankful that, because the Wilson's have a stable home, the family was also able to welcome a new member to their family.

Samantha, the dog, was a rescue dog that has fallen in love with her new family and fits right in to their new home.

Won't you please consider helping us this #GivingTuesday, November 30th, with a donation so we can continue to build #AffordableHousing for families like the Wilsons?

The Outlaw family came out to their future home this week to have pictures taken for an upcoming campaign and the boys were super excited to see the build for the first time. Mom, of course, has been coming out on Saturdays to help build their home to earn her sweat equity.
The family has been praying nightly for their new home and are so overjoyed at how the community is coming together to make their prayers come true.

Our Story

Since 1988 Habitat SHR has provided safe and affordable housing to over 220 families in South Hampton Roads. These families have fulfilled their dream of homeownership. For the first time they are enjoying a permanent environment for their children to live, grow and succeed.

National statistics have shown that family homeownership leads to successful children in our community. They are 25% more likely to graduate high school, twice as likely to graduate college and 60% more likely to own houses of their own. A truly remarkable legacy!

Habitat SHR is able to achieve its mission through the help of thousands of volunteers, material donations and the generosity of donors.

Just another way we are fueling our communities and supporting our veterans through Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, Inc.!
Payday families were hard at work this morning creating welcome signs for Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, Inc. home buyers! Thank you Payday for sponsoring this project and giving back to Hampton Roads during Family Volunteer Week!
Family Volunteer Week(end) is off to a great start. Volunteers are continuing the week of service at Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, Inc. and Judeo Christian Outreach Center. Sign up to volunteer with organizations throughout Hampton Roads at volunteerhr.org
Thank you AvalonBay Communities for volunteering with us by packaging and distributing food at Judeo Christian Outreach Center. But you didn’t stop there - you also added a third volunteer day painting “Welcome Home” signs for Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, Inc. We are incredibly grateful for how you give back to the community!
BAE Systems, Inc. recently sponsored the #military and #veterans day of #frontlineheroes build week at Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, Inc. in Norfolk, Virginia. The build site was situated in an established neighborhood about 20 miles from our company’s shipyard, and about a dozen Ship Repair employees teamed up with those current and veteran military members to do the work. For some, it was their first opportunity to work with Habitat for Humanity. We are very proud to make the American dream of #homeownership a little more accessible to this deserving family.
Please vote for Dennis. Don't tell the others but he's my favorite Red Hat. He's been building with us forever and had quadruple bypass surgery last August and was back on the build site by November. ❤
This week Suffolk Police Department partnered with Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, Inc. to build a house for a single mother of two in Suffolk. Thank you to Habitat for Humanity for organizing this weeklong event where law local enforcement, military, fire fighters, EMS, and health care workers were able to give back to our community. We were so excited to be involved and contribute to a great cause with an organization that truly changes lives. Thank you to the other Hampton Roads agencies who worked with us and made it a successful day! #FrontlineHeroes #InThisTogether #TeamWork #HabitatSHR #FHBW #YourSuffolkPD #SuffolkVA

#DonatersBeware Great great happy & Faithful Friday‼ Of you have items to donate to the restore I just had a negative experience with them where I actually took pictures of the kitchen cabinet trees and items that I wanted to donate to them because I'm having an apartment renovated so I took the pictures over to them and I actually sent them while I was standing there to their email address so that she could see the lady in transportation could see the actual pictures of the cabinet trees in items on her large computer screen why she saw them she had another one of her Associates look at it and they said they wanted the items there was nothing that would being deceptive about what we were offering them it was very clear what we were offering them and they approve and then they gave us a pickup date 2 days later so now what I need to say about the pickup date is I have a contractor who actually it was holding him up for two days for me to try to be generous and offer them these items for so they get there yesterday was with the pickup day and the drivers decided it wasn't worth picking up although the women administrators in the pickup and transportation division it already approved it they didn't take it and they said oh she said it was on the first floor I never told her I was on the first floor I already told them it was on the second floor and it wasn't like a whole lot of stairs either but they would not take the items they wasted our time and they wasted my project time and I have to have this stuff hauled off and I'm not have to dump it because it's good stuff but they wouldn't take it! I said that to say this they should just let the drivers decide on what they going to pick up a 9 pick up from the initial contact meaning when I first come to you and say do you want this just let the drivers inside because at the end of the day if it's a driver's discretion you might as well stop wasting people's time and let the drivers figure it out or decide in the first place! It was a big waste of time and like my point is that I would never be donating to Habitat for Humanity's in Norfolk again this does not include the other Habitat for Humanity's cuz I know the Newport News one operates much much better than this nor will I be purchasing anything which I am a customer I had been a customer before I will not be purchasing from them either!
