Col. Craig Holan relinquished duties as the commander of the 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade to Ltc. Justin Towell during the change of command ceremony May 23 2021 at Illinois State University.

A change of command is a military tradition that represents a transfer of authority and responsibility for a unit or command. The history, tradition, and accomplishments of the command are embodied in the colors. The passing of colors from an outgoing commander to an incoming commander ensures that the unit and its Soldiers are never without official leadership, represents a continuation of trust, and signifies an allegiance of Soldiers to their unit's commander.

Today's “Soldier Spotlight” is on Master Sergeant Emanuelwel Edwards, of Chatham, Illinois.

Edwards has served 22 years in the Illinois National Guard and is currently a Field Artillery Senior Sergeant.

Edwards is also a Police Officer with the Illinois State Police assigned to the Executive Protection Unit as the Detail Leader for Lieutenant Governor, Juliana Stratton. Prior to his 15 years with the ISP, Edwards served as a Springfield police officer.

Outside of serving in the military and law enforcement, Edwards is an avid sports fan and loves the Chicago Bulls. He has a wife and 2 kids and has taken up grilling as a new hobby.

In over twenty years of military service, Edwards said his biggest challenge was joining the military. “I came from a small town of about 1,200 people,” he said. “Going from Mounds Illinois and stepping into the big world of the Army at a young age was really something else.”

When asked what he would say to someone thinking about joining the National Guard, he says “I’ll tell them that this is one of the best decisions of their life. It will prepare you compete and find out about yourself.”

Towards the end of this year, Edwards will retire from the Illinois National Guard leaving behind two decades of knowledge. His presence and leadership during drill weekends, Annual Trainings and War fighters will be missed by many.

Todays “Soldier Spotlight” is on First Lieutenant Jacob Wendlandt of Poplar Grove, Illinois. Wendlandt is serving as a UH60 Blackhawk Helicopter Pilot in the Illinois National Guard.

Wendlandt currently works as a warehouse manager for Window World while also flying two days a week as a Blackhawk Pilot.

Prior to flying helicopters, Wendlandt had spent three years as a cadet while attending Southern Illinois University, Carbondale where he studied Aviation Management.

One of the main reasons Wendlandt decided to join the military was his grandfather. “My grandfather was a Green Beret, so the Army was always something I had seen,” Wendlandt said. “He also owned his own pilot shop which was a big impact on me as a kid. I loved being around airplanes and flying.”

To become a helicopter pilot Wendlandt had to attend a 13-month flight school. The average day was from 3 in the morning to 7 at night. Then there were long nights of studying. “We had to stand up and recite information from the training manual every morning,” Wendlandt said.

In the next five years Wendlandt plans on being someplace warm, still active in the National Guard, and hopefully working for an airline.
