*****MCLA Classes Cancelled October 29th and 30th in Anticipation of Hurricane Sandy*****

The MCLA Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) continues to meet to review weather forecasts and models and discuss our planning and response needs related to Hurricane Sandy.

Current projections continue to indicate that the level of impact this storm will have on our campus and the region is unpredictable but likely to be significant. Preparations to secure campus facilities and buildings in anticipation of sustained high winds and potentially heavy rainfall continue. We also are mindful that predictions indicate the probability of loss of power as the storm moves through the area.

Based on our best understanding at this time of the storm’s impact, and interest in taking every precaution to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff, President Grant, on the recommendation of CIRT, has directed that classes be canceled on Monday October 29 and Tuesday October 30.

In addition, students may want to consider leaving campus to be with friends or family. The best weather models currently available call for clear weather in this area through Sunday evening, which provides time for people to travel safely.

Residential Programs & Services will serve as the campus point of contact for all students who may need information regarding transportation options.

For those who remain on campus or in the area, we seek your cooperation in taking responsibility for your safety by sheltering in place during the storm and following directions from emergency personnel and college officials as the situation continues to develop.

Given the unpredictable nature of this storm, we will monitor conditions and communicate updates as the situation continues to develop. Please check for status updates on Monday, October 29th and Tuesday, October 30th.

Students, faculty, and staff should consult the MCLA Web site (www.mcla.edu or http://www.mcla.edu/campus_connection/) and First Class email, as well as the MCLA page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Massachusetts-College-of-Liberal-Arts/82654875561) and local media for updates and instructions in the event the storm’s intensity or duration makes further action necessary.

Thank you for your attention to this message. Please follow all appropriate and necessary safety precautions. The Critical Incident team will continue to monitor forecasts and conditions and review our planning and preparation accordingly. We will provide updates to the MCLA community as we receive additional information.
