🎉 Exciting news for downtown North Bend!

The City of North Bend has received a $15,000 AARP Community Challenge Flagship Grant to help make important local information easier to access in the heart of our community.

The grant will support a new outdoor digital kiosk at the North Bend Visitor Information Center as part of a future downtown community hub. Once installed, the kiosk will help residents, seniors, veterans, visitors, and local businesses quickly find information about:

✅ Emergency preparedness and tsunami evacuation resources
✅ Police, fire, and community services
✅ Downtown businesses, walking routes, and parking maps
✅ Main Street and City events
✅ Senior programs and veteran resources
✅ Public art, museums, and cultural attractions
✅ Accessible tourism information through Wheel the World
✅ Visitor information, recreation, and local destinations

This project is about more than technology. It is about helping people find useful information when and where they need it.

AARP announced a record $8.3 million national investment in its 2026 Community Challenge program, supporting 750 quick-action projects across the country. North Bend is honored to be included among communities working to make public spaces more welcoming, accessible, connected, and useful for people of all ages.

This new downtown addition will help connect more people with the resources, businesses, attractions, history, and opportunities that make North Bend a special place to live, work, visit, and explore.

North Bend Street Maintenance Update: New Pavement Plan in Progress

The City of North Bend is continuing its work to make street maintenance more transparent, data-informed, and financially responsible.

Earlier this year, Public Works used Cyvl’s AI-assisted roadway assessment technology to scan and evaluate streets across the community. That data is now being used to prepare an updated pavement management plan for City Council consideration.

The City’s last published street repair schedule was adopted around 2020. That list included 33 street segments, with estimated construction costs of about $3 million in 2019 dollars. Since then, 17 of those street segments have been completed. During that same period, the City had about $2 million available for the work, while asphalt prices increased by roughly 55% from 2020 to 2025.

Because the old list is now several years out of date, Public Works is preparing a new plan based on updated roadway condition data, current construction costs, and the City’s available funding.

One of the key questions will be how to balance preservation work, such as micro overlays and fog seals, with larger reconstruction projects. Preservation is often less expensive over the long term, but it requires careful planning and consistent investment. Cyvl’s preliminary recommendation is to spend about one-third of available pavement funding on preservation and about two-thirds on reconstruction.

Public Works expects to complete the updated pavement management plan this month. Once finalized, it will provide a more current and useful guide for future street maintenance priorities.

The overall goal remains simple: use good data, practical planning, and limited public dollars as wisely as possible.

🌎🧹 CITY WIDE CLEAN UP DAY is almost here! 🧹🌎

Join us on Saturday, April 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. as Coos Bay and North Bend come together in honor of Earth Day to help clean up our community.

Here is how to participate:
Bring at least 4 food items for the South Coast Food Share or make a $4 donation to Coos Sanitary Service, and you can drop off up to 4 cans (35-gallon size) of household garbage and recyclables.

Drop-off locations:
• South 4th Street Parking Lot (between Anderson & Curtis, Coos Bay)
• Eastside Fire Station – 365 D Street, Coos Bay
• Empire Boat Ramp, Coos Bay
• Pony Village Mall (by Mini Pet Mart, North Bend)

Please note:
We are not accepting tires, appliances, furniture, metal, or hazardous materials.

This event is open to residents of Coos Bay and North Bend only.
