Bycatch: βdiscarded catch of marine species and unobserved mortality due to a direct encounter with fishing vessels and gearβ - NOAA Fisheries
From dolphins and sea turtles to seabirds and sharks, countless species are caught in fishing gear daily. Reducing bycatch helps preserve biodiversity, protect endangered species, and maintain the health of our oceans. Effects of bycatch include:
π Decline of non-target species, some of which may be endangered or threatened.
π¦ Severe impact of marine ecosystems and habitats
π¦ Imbalance of predator/prey species and fish populations
π¦ Ecological and economic imbalances
At A.I.S, our skilled team of #biologists collect essential data to #reducebycatch, minimize #bycatchmortality, and assess the impacts of fishing on habitats. Our independent data collection supports science, sustainability, and #fisheriesmanagement activities.
