It's a family affair! Recently members were awarded citations, the plates they are holding, commemorating families that have multiple members in the USCGAux. The Shipmate taking the picture also received the citation. The two Shipmates on the right also received awards for most "Marine Dealer Visitations" and most "Vessel Examinations" for the year.

U.S. Coast Guard Northeast

Back in June, Rear Adm. Andrew Tiongson assumed command of the First Coast District.

Today, he is sharing his three guiding principles for Northeast Coast Guard members to adhere to.

The three principles are:

Leadership: Establish what matters, set clear direction and inspire others to do more.

Proficiency: Continuously pursue excellence in everything we do and exceed expectations as experts in our craft.

Teamwork: Embody our core values, cultivate positive command climates, and unconditionally help each other to achieve mission success.

Ships of steel and sailors of iron. I found another of these great old films about iron sailors fighting their ship around Cape Horn in a typical full blown storm. Hope you enjoy these amazing images from an era long lost to all but a few.

Women’s History Month: Chief Warrant Officer Elizabeth F. Splaine

CWO Splaine was the first woman to advance to Chief Warrant Officer. Splaine was among those women forced out of the Coast Guard upon the dissolution of the SPARs. Splaine decided if she had to go, she’d go fighting. “...I was the first woman Warrant Officer and after I passed the exam and the interviews, and the Secretary of the Treasury had signed my Warrant, I was told that in order to be promoted, I would have to leave the service. [and stay in the reserves] They said there was no place for a woman Warrant. That was in December 1958 and until June 23, 1959 I fought everyone and anyone who would listen to me. THEY didn’t have to go home when promoted. I held out for what I thought was my right.” Splaine served as the Administrative Assistant in the Office of Reserve until her retirement in 1971. Splaine died in 2009.

About the picture:
MARINETTE, Wis., (AUG. 12, 2000)--Coast Guard SPARs who served in World War II gathered at Marinette, Wis., to witness the christening of the Coast Guard Cutter Spar, a 225-foot buoy tender named to honor them. Attorney General Janet Reno (rear right) smashed the traditional champagne bottle across the cutter's bow during the ceremony. Official representatives at the ceremony included prospective commanding officer of the SPAR, Lt. Cmdr. Joanna Nunan (left front), and retired SPARs CWO Betty Splaine (center front) and PH3 Lorraine Dieterle (right front).

The Arctic seas are seeing a huge influx of commercial shipping -- threatening the lives of the whales, seals and other animals.

Thankfully, the U.S. Coast Guard just answered our call for increased shipping safeguards! Send a message now that you support their efforts to keep wildlife safe.
