What triggers a Public Safety Power Shutoff? 🔌

If your power goes out while a nearby neighborhood still has electricity, you may wonder why.

Southern California Edison’s article explains how Public Safety Power Shutoffs work, why customers may be affected differently, and what determines when power can safely be restored.

We’re sharing this resource with our New Horizons community to help individuals, families, and caregivers stay informed. 💙

🌎 Drop! Cover! Hold On!

Yesterday at 10:15 AM, New Horizons joined millions of Californians in the 2026 Great California ShakeOut, the world’s largest earthquake drill.

Our Members, staff and volunteers practiced what to do when the ground starts shaking:
⬇️ DROP to your hands and knees
🛡️ COVER your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk
✊ HOLD ON until the shaking stops

Our North Hills campus is just a few miles from the center of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, so we know how important it is to be ready. Practicing every year keeps our Members, staff, volunteers and visitors safe on campus. 💙

Is your family prepared? Visit ShakeOut.org to learn more.

A little island spirit. A whole lot of appreciation. 🌺💙

Our Island Vibes BBQ Bash brought the New Horizons team together to celebrate our incredible Direct Support Professionals during National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, September 14–19!

Every day, our DSPs help individuals build independence, pursue their goals, and feel connected to their community. This celebration was a chance to pause, enjoy time together, and recognize the people behind that work.

Help us keep the appreciation going. Leave a 💙 for our DSPs!

More communities reached. More Members supported. More DSPs to celebrate. 💙

On Wednesday, September 16, we celebrated staff from our Glendale office as part of New Horizons’ DSP Recognition Week, September 14–19.

With offices now in Glendale, our Direct Support Professionals’ reach stretches across the Valley, delivering personalized services that help our Members build independence, pursue their goals, and stay connected to their communities.

To our Glendale team and DSPs throughout New Horizons: thank you for the care, patience, and dedication you bring to your work. We celebrate you this week and appreciate you every day.

Everyday independence grows with encouragement, trust, and people who care. 💙

Today, Thursday, September 17, we’re continuing DSP Recognition Week by celebrating the Direct Support Professionals who support community living at New Horizons. Their dedication helps individuals build confidence, make choices, and stay connected to their communities.

During DSP Recognition Week, September 14–19, we’re grateful for the patience, compassion, and commitment our DSPs bring to their work every day.

Watch the video for a glimpse of that support in action, and join us in thanking our DSPs!

On Monday, September 14, we kicked off our DSP Recognition Week department spotlights by celebrating our Monarch Mobile Day Program (MMDP) and Youth Navigation Services! 💙🌺

Our Youth Navigation Services team shares how they help young people ages 16–21 build confidence and independence through travel training, employment preparation, and leadership opportunities. Through NextGen workshops, they also connect Spanish-speaking families with community resources and support.

Throughout DSP Recognition Week, September 14–19, we’re celebrating the people behind that everyday guidance and encouragement.

To the Direct Support Professionals supporting MMDP and Youth Navigation Services: thank you for helping the people we serve explore their communities, make their own choices, and take meaningful steps toward their goals.

Mahalo Nui Loa. Thank you very much!

New Horizons is spreading the word from one of our community partners, Southern California Edison (SCE), about the importance of calling 811 before starting any digging project.

Whether you’re planting a tree, installing a fence or beginning a larger construction project, underground utility lines may be closer to the surface than you think. Calling 811 at least two working days before digging allows professionals to mark buried lines and can help prevent injuries, power outages and costly repairs.

The service is free and required by California law. If you or someone you know is planning a project, remember to call before you dig.
