A simple camping trip can turn into a life-threatening emergency in seconds. While in the Boundary Waters, Al suffered a severe knife wound that left his muscle exposed and a visible stream of blood projecting from his arm. As he started losing color and becoming unresponsive, his crew knew a simple band-aid wasn't going to cut it. Not all tourniquets are built the same.
Jeff Kirkham breaks down the difference between windlass tourniquets and elastic tourniquets, including how each design works, why size and carryability matter, and why training with the gear you carry is so important.

Windlass tourniquets use a strap and rod system to tighten pressure. Elastic tourniquets, like the RATS, use stretch, wrap, and tension to help control severe bleeding.

The best tourniquet is the one you have with you — and know how to use.
