During my six tenure on the school board, my colleagues and I have put forth significant effort, along with administration, to address the transportation issues that affected the district for years. When I first moved to Northville, bus routes for middle school and high school students all had satellite pick up locations, as a cost savings measure following the 2012 financial crisis effecting the school aid budget.
As the district and our community worked to bounce back after the initial year of the COVID19 pandemic, wages for drivers were not competitive. We had many unfilled driver positions which caused a ripple of problems across the community including long wait times for students and families in the morning and in the afternoon. Over the past six years, we have worked to raise wages, make significant upgrades to the NPS Transportation Center and improve our relationship with our third party contractor, Durham Transportation.
This week, I met with the leaders from Teamsters Local 243 to discuss their priorities as they finalized their endorsement of my campaign. We had a really good conversation about how much the board's focus over the past six years has really made it possible for our essential workers - our bus drivers - to make a living wage and support themselves and their families. It was a really cool AHA experience for me - that the work I have done with my board colleagues has had a tremendously positive impact in our community and beyond for working people. If elected to represent our community, I am committed to continuing this focus. Our workers deserve it. Our community deserves a public servant with this commitment.
