As we celebrate America’s Independence Day, may we also remember those who stood alongside the American colonies in the fight for freedom.
On October 9, 1779, during the assault on Savannah, the allied French and American forces came under devastating British fire. Among those who fought with extraordinary courage were the Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue—a unit composed largely of free men of African descent from what is now Haiti. As the allied lines faltered, these brave soldiers helped cover the retreat, preventing even greater losses and demonstrating remarkable valor.
Their sacrifice is an important part of the shared history between Haiti and the United States, reminding us that the pursuit of liberty has always been strengthened by people of many backgrounds.
While the ideals of liberty and justice for all have not always been fully realized, we must continue striving toward that vision. Let us never lose sight of the enduring truth expressed in the Declaration of Independence: that all people are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
May we continue working together to build a nation that more fully reflects these ideals for every generation.
