🚨 **HELP US IDENTIFY OUR UNEXPECTED VISITOR!** 🚨

The Nyssa Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the individual pictured below.

This individual found an open door and an opportunity to take a little tour of Nyssa Middle School. Thankfully, there were no items stolen or vandalism to the school — but our visitor did apparently find themselves a snack while they were there! 👀🍪

We would appreciate any information that may help us identify this individual and determine the circumstances surrounding their visit.

Welcome Back to School, Nyssa! 📚🐾

The Nyssa Police Department would like to welcome all of our students, teachers, staff, and families back for another school year!

We’re wishing everyone a safe, successful, and positive year ahead! Extra NPD officers will be present on the first day of school to welcome students back and help ensure everyone has a safe start to the school year.

Parents, please don’t be alarmed when you see Nyssa Police officers on campus. We’re there to support our schools, welcome our students, and help keep our community’s kids safe.

Pursuit Ends in Crash — Multi-Agency Response

This afternoon, the Nyssa Police Department was notified by Canyon County that the Parma Police Department was pursuing a vehicle traveling in our direction.

The pursuit entered the City of Nyssa at a high rate of speed before continuing out of town onto county roads. The suspect vehicle, a gray Acura, was traveling southbound on Grey Boulevard when the driver attempted to make a high-speed left turn onto Eureka Avenue. The vehicle failed to negotiate the turn and crashed into an irrigation ditch, causing the Acura to roll onto its roof and submerge the occupants.

Parma and Nyssa officers immediately responded and were able to remove all three occupants from the vehicle. Two passengers were treated and released at the scene. The driver sustained injuries and was airlifted for further medical treatment.

We would like to thank all of the agencies and emergency responders who assisted with this incident:

• Oregon State Police
• Nyssa Fire Department
• Life Flight

This incident is another reminder of the dangers created by high-speed pursuits and the importance of the quick coordination and response of our law enforcement, fire, EMS, and medical partners.

We are grateful for the teamwork displayed by everyone involved in getting all three occupants safely out of the vehicle.

# # 🚌 SCHOOL BUS SAFETY REMINDER 🛑

**SCHOOL IS STARTING BACK UP — PLEASE SLOW DOWN AND PAY ATTENTION!**

As students return to school, we will once again have school buses making frequent stops throughout our community.

When you see a school bus with **flashing amber lights**, slow down and prepare to stop.

When the bus activates its **flashing red lights and stop arm**, you **MUST STOP** before reaching the bus and remain stopped until the red lights are turned off.

⚠️ **Do NOT attempt to pass a stopped school bus.**

Remember:
• Watch carefully for children getting on and off the bus.
• Never pass a bus with its red warning lights flashing.
• Be especially alert in residential areas, school zones and near bus stops.
• A painted median or turn lane does **not** mean you can continue driving past a stopped school bus in Oregon.
• Give yourself extra time and expect school buses to make frequent stops.

**One moment of impatience isn't worth a child's life.**

Please help us keep our children safe this school year. **Slow down. Pay attention. STOP for school buses.**

🎒 BACK TO SCHOOL — AUGUST 17 🎒

Nyssa students are headed back to school on Monday, August 17, and we expect it to be a busy day around our schools and throughout the community.

The Nyssa Police Department will have extra officers on shift to help keep our students, families, pedestrians, and motorists safe as everyone settles back into the school-year routine.

As you travel through school zones and around town, please:

🚗 Slow down and stay alert
🛑 Obey school-zone signs and crossing guards
📵 Put the phone down and avoid distractions
🚸 Watch carefully for children walking or riding bikes
🚌 Stop when required for school buses
❤️ Give yourself a little extra time and patience

Our kids are counting on all of us. Let’s work together to make the first day—and every day—a safe one for our students and families.

The Nyssa Police Department is proud to announce that Chief Steve Wilson was officially sworn in as the new Chief of Police at the Nyssa City Council Meeting on August 11, 2026.

Chief Wilson brings nearly 18 years of law enforcement experience, including almost 6 years proudly serving right here in the City of Nyssa.

Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in a career built on dedication, honor, integrity, and service to a time-honored profession.

Please join the members of the Nyssa Police Department and our community in congratulating Chief Wilson as he takes on this new responsibility and continues his commitment to serving the citizens of Nyssa.

The City of Nyssa has inspected the issue of bees and wasps around the splash pad area. A pest control company was brought in and they inspected the grounds for any nests or hives. None were located. Be aware they come only for the water and not you. Have fun and be safe, there are still plenty of hot days ahead.
