DOT agrees to lower East Oak Island Drive speed limit.

On Aug. 18, council passed an amendment to the town’s speed limit ordinances that drops the limit from 45 to 35 mph between 19th Street and Country Club Road. The change extends the 35 mph zone along East Oak Island Drive from 37th Street to 19th Street.

The speed limit from 19th Street to Middleton Avenue will remain 45 mph. The new ordinance also limits the use of low speed vehicles (golf carts) to east of 37th Street. Under state law, golf carts are permitted on roads with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or lower unless prohibited by the town.

One of my favorite parts of coming back to Oak Island, NC every year isn’t just the beach - it’s witnessing volunteers come in from all over (including Ohio!) to protect one of nature’s smallest miracles.

Every summer, these dedicated volunteers carefully rope off sea turtle nests, monitor them around the clock, and ensure the hatchlings have the best possible chance to make it safely to the ocean. Watching families, kids, and visitors gather quietly to cheer on these tiny turtles as they begin their impossible journey is something we cherish.

It’s a beautiful reminder that conservation isn’t just about laws or policies - it’s about neighbors showing up, giving their time, and teaching the next generation that nature big and small is worth protecting.

Thank you to the amazing Turtle Conservancy volunteers who make this possible every year. You make this place even more special. 🐢🌊💚
