Some of us have spent the past few days listening to "Jolene" and "Islands in the Stream," wiping away tears, thankful we got to live in the same time as Dolly Parton.

Others of us got to work and put together a curated list of all things Dolly: her biographies, CDs, movies, children's books, and even a cookbook.

In addition to being a prolific songwriter, fashion icon, and kind human with the power to change people's lives, Dolly Parton was a literacy champion. She would have wanted us to share books.

What a delicious evening of all things burgers!

Last week, we were thrilled to welcome Chicago restaurant critic Maggie Hennessy to celebrate her new book, The Burger Bible.

Maggie led an engaging conversation about all things burgers, from the history of this beloved classic to some truly staggering burger statistics. It was a deliciously engaging evening filled with plenty of food for thought.

A big thank-you to Dandelion Bookshop for bringing copies of The Burger Bible for attendees to purchase. It's also available in our catalog (oppl.org/catalog).

Thanks to everyone who joined us for this fun and flavorful evening, and to those who nominated the best burgers around. Library staff included!

"Generative Interference," on view now through September 19 at the Main Library Gallery is an exhibit of paintings by Thomas McCue representing some of his most recent work and going back approximately two years. As a first foray into solo exhibition, this showing represents a span of experimentation and evolution of both subject and process over that time. Working with a basic premise of taking "snapshots from an imagined narrative," Thomas works generatively, making marks intuitively and allowing subject matter to emerge over the over the course of work. Drawing from his surroundings, biological forms and processes, and "entities" from a lifetime of sci-fi and fantasy culture obsession, Thomas goes through an automatic and expressive synthesis.

Join us tomorrow at the Art Exhibit Reception Thursday, August 20, from 6–7:30 pm at the Main Library Gallery to meet artist Thomas McCue and learn more about his work. We hope to see you there!

Last week we explored the beautiful Japanese art of Tataki-zome (打叩き染め)—a traditional dyeing technique that translates quite literally to “hammer and dye.” Using fresh leaves, petals, stems, natural fiber, and a simple mallet, participants transferred the vibrant colors and patterns of plants directly onto cloth and paper. The result? Striking, one-of-a-kind botanical impressions—each as unique as the person who created it.

Artist Jessica Hannah guided attendees through the process, from selecting botanicals to uncovering the hidden patterns within each plant through careful hammering. A fun and creative workshop was had by all! Thank you to everyone who joined us last week and brought your curiosity and creativity along.

Which Frank Lloyd Wright site would you visit first?

At our Author Visit last month, author Kristine Hansen introduced her book, "Frank Lloyd Wright’s Illinois: Explore His Most Prolific State, From Prairie to Usonian" featuring 41 of Frank Lloyd-designed sites all within 3 hours of Chicago, sharing the stories behind some of his most celebrated works and why preserving these places matters for future generations. Attendees learned about iconic locations including the Charnley-Persky House, Fabyan Villa Museum & Japanese Garden, Frederick C. Robie House, Unity Temple and many more—before joining an engaging Q&A on Kristine's favorite Wright site, how her interest in his work began, and what went into choosing the homes and buildings included in the book.
