Oakdale Public Library Happenings
October 2025

It is a new fiscal year and the Oakdale Library is here to serve you. We offer copying, laminating, and a public computer (to be used at the library). We have books from Nebraska and local authors to check out and children and young adult books that are AR rated, ready to read and take a test at school.

Our fall hours are as follows: Tuesday and Wednesday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday: 11 a.m. to 4 (unless people are at the library at 4, then will stay open till 5).

Oct 1 we will be reading to the children at Little Lambs at 10 a.m. I should be to the Library by 11 to open at regular time.

Oct 9 is the Oakdale Public Library Board meeting at 6 p.m. If the public has something they want to see addressed at this meeting they must contact Fae by October 3rd to get it on the agenda.

Oct 15, I will not be at the library this day. Kim will be here but not sure of the time yet, so call the library to make sure she is here before popping in. Thank you!

Oct 25, the Oakdale Public Library will be hosting a Halloween Party at the Community Center from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be games and prizes and popcorn. Donations of candy and prizes are welcome to share with the children of the community.

Please remember that our library operates on donations so in order to present programs and continue buying books and projects for the kids and adults, we gratefully accept money donations as well as volunteers to help keep the library active. We continue to look for board members so if you are interested, please stop at the library and let us know.

Oct 29 we will be at Little Lambs at 10 a.m. to read to these children. I should be to the Library by 11 to open at regular time.

The library has two patio sets for sale. This includes a glass top table, four folding chairs and an umbrella for each table. We are asking a donation of $100 or best offer.

The Oakdale Public Library is open tomorrow, Saturday, September 13th, from 11 to 5. A movie will be shown at 1 p.m. so bring your pillow and blanket and enjoy the "Wizard of Oz".

Did you know that Dorothy's ruby slippers were silver in the book? It was a political statement of that time. In the movie, they changed the slippers to ruby because that was the first movie to have color and the silver made it look like a black and white movie.

Word of the Day: nerve-racking or nerve-wracking?

Merriam-Webster defines “nerve-racking” as an adjective that describes something “marked by or causing agitation or uncomfortable feelings,” as in, “It was a nerve-racking exam” or “This is a nerve-racking game!”

However, the term “nerve-wracking” is listed as a spelling variation. According to M-W, both versions are correct, but “nerve-racking” is preferred.

Conversely, the Oxford English Dictionary explains that “nerve-racking” predates “nerve-wracking,” but the latter is the more commonly used modern version. It seems even major dictionaries have differing opinions on these terms.

Oakdale Public Library Happenings
August 2025

School starts in just a couple of weeks followed by Labor Day weekend at the end of the month. Oftentimes people will try to get a small weekend vacation in before those school doors open, others wait and have a family and friends’ cookout over Labor Day weekend. Nonetheless, those lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer are drawing to a close and we need to buckle down and hit the books. But always remember, reading a fun book right before falling to sleep is a good way to relax and we have lots of fun books here at the library!

The Village of Oakdale is organizing a food pantry. If you would like to donate food items, please drop them off at the Village Office Monday-Thursday, 8-3 and Friday from 8-noon.
These items can also be dropped off at the Oakdale Library Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from noon to 7 p.m.

During the month of August, the library will be having a book drive during regular business hours, new or used, it doesn’t matter, we will take whatever books you have to offer. Just remember if we can’t use your book, we will donate it to the Mission.

August 6th we will be offering Bingo from 3 to 5 p.m. here at the library. This is for adults and children. We have prizes for all ages.

August 7th at 6 p.m. the library board will have its regular meeting. All public is welcome.

August 8th from 4 to 6 p.m. children of all ages are welcome to come to the library and build their best Lego creation.

August 15th at 1 p.m. Moms come and enjoy coffee, tea and treats and take time to relax after a busy summer with the kids. We will meet again on August 29th, same time.

August 31st at 1:30 p.m. Professor William C. Miller (formerly of Nebraska Christian College and New Way Singers) will be presenting a piano concert at the Church of Christ in Oakdale (408 5th Street). Professor Miller is in his 90’s and a delight to listen to…he may even have a story to share. Although the concert is free, any donations will benefit the Lois Johnson Memorial Library. Refreshments to follow.
