Man fatally shot in East Oakland

This is Oakland’s 87th murder of the year. At this point last year the city had 61 murders and 75 for all of 2019. There have been a total of 93 homicides in Oakland so far this year. Violent crime is exploding in Oakland, especially in East Oakland.

#Oaklandsfinest are striving under difficult circumstances to serve our residents. Oakland Police Officers see first hand the tragic consequences of violent crime on Oakland’s families. The silence in response to such violence by city leaders is very disappointing. Oakland deserves better.

An interesting article. Thank you to the San Francisco Chronicle for taking the time to do a deep dive into #defund or “reimagining” policing in Oakland and exploring the topic from multiple perspectives.

Regardless of where you stand, the level of violent crime [84 murders & 400+ shooting so far this year] in Oakland is unacceptable to Oakland residents and police officers alike.
#oaklandsfinest

Oakland policymakers had to confront a paradox: that the neighborhoods most threatened by police violence are also the ones demanding better and more consistent law enforcement.

Today New York Times reporter Thomas Fuller talks about the increase in crime in general and looks at Oakland in particular. Much of the article illustrates the significant increase in violent crime Oakland's residents and #Oaklandsfinest are facing.

A grim pattern has emerged in the United States: Homicide rates are surging in major cities and smaller communities. Experts say the rise is linked to the coronavirus.

Another story about the unabated violence in Oakland. This year, #oaklandsfinest have recovered almost 1,000 firearms and have responded to and investigated 80+ murders and 400+ shootings.

In this article, Oakland Police Deputy Chief Armstrong highlights the revolving door of arrests Oakland Police Officers see for firearms offenses. He says:

“We are talking about being back out in less than a day,” Armstrong said.

What’s shocking is the response of the District Attorney. She says:

“The D.A.’s office advocates for law enforcement to reach out to a duty judge at time of arrest to set bail on these gun possession cases or gun violence cases,” she said.

She wants #oaklandfinest to do her job too? Hardworking Oakland Police Officers are struggling to protect our residents as violent crime in Oakland sky rockets. We are arresting suspects for violent crime. How about the District Attorney keep these violent offenders in jail! Don’t scapegoat #oaklandfinest for your own failures.

The District Attorney can end zero bail for violent crime, charge suspects who are responsible for gun violence, and then actually prosecute them. That’s the District Attorney’s job!

Once known for calm and quiet, the eastern Oakland hills are exploding almost nightly with semiautomatic gunfire. One theory is it’s gang members and others taking target practice before returning to their turf.

The death toll from yet another night of violence in Oakland. Five shootings, 2 dead and a 13 year old wounded by gunfire.

From the story below; “With the two killings, Oakland police have now investigated 85 homicides in the city this year, of which 80 are classified as murders. For all of last year, police investigated 78 homicides in Oakland, 75 of which were considered murders.....”

Hundreds gather for funeral of Aaron Pryor, 16-year-old Oakland football star

Our condolences to Aaron Pryor’s family and friends. Thank you to the San Francisco Chronicle for highlighting the ongoing violence in Oakland. There have been more murders in Oakland so far this year than in all of last year. Two more murders added to the death toll overnight. #Oaklandsfinest are striving to respond amid a deafening silence from City Hall and a ever falling number of Oakland Police Officers. Oakland’s leaders are asleep at the wheel as the carnage continues all around them.

Hundreds of people attended a funeral Saturday for the Oakland high school football star, who was shot to death in September less than 100 yards from his home.

East Oakland the epicenter of city's surge of homicides amid pandemic. 'The situation is getting worse'

Oakland is facing a significant uptick in violent crime. Oakland Police Officers are struggling to serve under challenging circumstances. A city awash with firearms and little support to fighting crime and protect residents from Oakland's leaders. But Oakland Police Officers continue to show up, work hard, and have taken almost 1000 guns off our streets. Saving lives. #oaklandsfinest

Oakland has so far logged 79 slayings in 2020, a 36% rise from the 58 murders seen by this time last year. Police are linking the uptick to the coronavirus pandemic, gang violence and guns.
