When Vic Lee and I went to former San Mateo Police Department Chief Susan Manheimer's retirement party 4 months ago, I did not foresee this. That she would come out of retirement after a respected 35-year career in Bay Area law enforcement to step into a most challenging situation. She said yes to becoming the interim chief of Oakland Police Department amid tremendous acrimony between the Oakland Police Officers' Association and the citizen-led Oakland Police Commission over, among other things, the fate of 5 police officers involved in the shooting death of a homeless man. Yesterday, Chief Manheimer talked with Dan Ashley and me in her first and only media interview since starting her new role.

We may wear different patches on our shoulders, but we all hold the same line. In mourning fellow Detective Jeffrey Scalf, who was tragically taken from us by COVID-19, we take solace in the tremendous support for our hero and his family. The DEA was honored by the incredible number of first responders who helped us salute our brother in blue. We will never forget Jeff, and the DEA will forever be here to support his loved ones.

The continuing toll of this virus on the NYPD is alarming......

James Gagliano writes of the NYPD: "The Covid-19 scourge has eroded the ranks of a noble department that weathered the Civil War, the 1918 influenza pandemic, the stock market crash in 1929, World Wars I and II and the September 11 terrorist attacks."

An Oakland kid through and through- @ofd20dr has held nearly every post in our great Union, and led us through thick and thin as our General President. He proudly represented Local 55 as the only charter Local in the @iaff_team10th district at the #IAFF ‘s 100 year convention in 2018.
Generations of #oaklandfirefighters are all better off because of his leadership, sacrifice, and lifelong commitment to service and #organizedlabor .
