Cooking up something special for Labor Day weekend? Remember to put your inedible food scraps like peels and bones into your green bin. It's easy and prevents climate change! Here are some handy tips:

✔️ Remove stickers, twist ties, and rubber bands from produce.
✔️ Keep a small bowl handy for food prep trimmings and for scraping your plate.
✔️ Use a paper bag, newspaper liner, or kitchen pail to collect food scraps
✔️ Store your food scraps in a convenient place on the counter, under the sink, or
in the fridge or freezer – especially for meat and fish or during hot weather.
❗ Plastic, glass, and metal should never go in the green cart.

Be our favorite host 💚 🤩 , try these nine tips to reduce waste ♻️ at your BBQ this :

🕕 Time of Day - People will eat more if the event spans lunch or dinner.

🥖 Snacks vs. Meals - If you have a lot of appetizers, people will eat less of the main dish. Plan small portions if you love snacks.

🤢 Avoid Spoilage - Food is safe at room temperature for no more than 4 hours, less if it’s in the sunlight. For a buffet, serve items that won’t spoil and plate the rest in small portions. Replenish at least once during the event. If you set out food, turn on an alarm or timer so you know when to refresh it.

🥄 Normalize Real Plates and Utensils - Use reusables or at least the old-fashioned, thin white paper plates that are compostable. Use your everyday forks and serving utensils. Mason jars are trendy and low-cost for beverages. Label with tape or colored rubber bands (saved from your veggies). Cloth napkins dress up every event!

🍽️ Better Potluck - Delegate! Share your menu with guests and ask them to bring something specific: a salad, dessert, chips & salsa, or their own fork and cup!

🥡 Send Home Leftovers - Provide reused take-out containers or ask guests to bring their own.

🌈 Eat a Rainbow - Load up with hearty grilled veggies and side dishes and serve less meat. It’s ok to eat some meat but it’s harmful to waste meat.

📋 Meal Plan - Start your party menu with what you have! What cans of beans, dried grains, or open condiments are already in your cabinets? Add frozen veggies to a quinoa salad. Have you ever tried pasta salad with 2, 3, or 4 different shapes? Use mustard and miso paste and make a sweet fusion Carolina-style sauce for your grilled items.

🍍 Decorate - Ditch the balloons (forever, please). String up some lights or use candles. Make a centerpiece with fruit that can double as dessert!

🤩 Not Your Party? - If a friend is hosting, offer to lend your cloth napkins or mason jar glassware. Individual actions add up to matter because we influence our friends and friends don’t let friends throw wasteful parties!

It's 🍷. Be sure to freeze any unfinished wine for cooking later. A lot of resources go into producing it: growing the grapes, harvesting, crushing and pressing, fermentation, clarification, the aging process, bottling, and transportation. Share this red wine mushroom recipe to that friend that loves ❤️ wine: https://bit.ly/3QQpf63

Did you know that you can freeze your leftover wine to use for cooking or a vinaigrette? I confess, once in a while, I have left an opened wine bottle for too long in my refrigerator causing it to lose all of its youthful flavors. I still remember the sense of guilt I felt while pouring the wine dow...

Great energy-saving tip! 💡

Great energy-saving tip! 💡

To conserve energy (and save money on your energy bill!), use washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers during off-peak hours (AKA not between the hours of 4:00PM and 9:00PM).

Most residents and businesses in Albany are on Time-of-Use (TOU) rates, which means that the cost of electricity is different at different times of day. During “peak” hours, typically 4PM-9PM, electricity rates are highest.

For years I was always getting notices about the drop off in Albany - now I get nothing and missed the 10/11 drop off. How can I sign up again for notices so this never happens again?
Does anyone know of a place that recycles plastic bags with a triangle and # in the triangle?
Hello, I live in San Lorenzo and am wondering if anyone knows where I can recycle clothes (socks, shirts, pants, jeans, etc.) that are no longer in condition to be donated.
Any ideas for how best to dispose of textbooks and other books with a deadline looming? Asking for a friend who is a teacher librarian in Oakland Unified. She says they unload a lot of books every year. Thanks in advance.

Help stop Corporate Greed and Waste

Good Morning, I have a plea here for your help. Starting Feb 7 through Feb 13, Joann's Fabric stores, nationwide is running a trade in your old sewing machine sale. While I understand you may not consider old sewing machines to be newsworthy, my problem is this: I have contacted Joann's Corporate and have not received a response. First I was told the machines would be donated and or scrapped/ trashed. Other concerned citizens have approached individual store managers and have been told the machines will be destroyed. My issue is many old machines that are made of all metal are so well built they are still working today and are better built than the plastic machines sold today. It is bad for the environment for Joann's to trash sewing machines. We need to reduce the amount of trash and keep things from going in landfills. As a large corporation Joann's should care more for the environment and set a positive example. This is similar to the cash for clunkers program that had negative effects on the environment and removed low cost vehicles from circulation. Can you please help me to expose Joann for their plan to destroy valuable sewing machines. Please help me to keep these out of the landfills and force Joann's to do the right thing. Thank you.

Is it true that your trucks keeps track of when each bin is picked up for each residence on pickup day? I was told that today when I called because my green bin was not picked up yesterday.
I am wondering if any elementary schools in the Bay Area or anywhere uses the pump bottles for ketchup in the cafeteria. My school still uses the individual packets which seems very unfriendly to the environment. I am hoping to promote more green practices at school. Thank you.
