Here's an easy action you can do today to help save natural resources: ditch the paper towels in your kitchen and try reusable ones instead. Thanks Bay Area Recycling Outreach Coalition (BayROC)!

Why using reusable towels for spills and cleaning is so important. "Leaving existing forests to grow will be more effective at mitigating climate change over the next 80 years than reforestation or planting new forests, Dr. Moomaw and his colleagues have said. A tree planted this year won’t make much of a difference in terms of carbon sequestration over the next decade, a period many scientists say is critical for climate action. “They just don’t absorb enough carbon dioxide,” Dr. Moomaw said. “They aren’t big enough.”" https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/08/climate/nyt-climate-newsletter-forests.html

So excited for the launch on Friday of a new venture, #DigDeepFoodHub, that will help solve hunger in Alameda County's most vulnerable neighborhoods while keeping food from going to waste. All in Alameda County Dig Deep Farms and Produce Alameda County Sheriff's Office #stopfoodwaste

Every day, we throw away tons of healthy, edible, uneaten food. Yet 12% of residents in #AlamedaCounty struggle to put healthy food on the table consistently. In partnership with #alamedacountyprobation and All in Alameda County, the Dig Deep Farms Food Hub employs formerly incarcerated people to divert more than 300,000 pounds of edible food from going to waste every year, repackage the food, and deliver it to affordable housing locations throughout the county. #ALLINforFoodSecurity #ALLINAlamedaCounty #DigDeepFoodHub

#MondayMotivation: Start a #Reuse Corner at work where colleagues can swap gently used clothing, toys, bags & more. A shelf and some sort of hanging rod is all you need to get started. Here are some more tips for success, and swipe through the photos to check out ours!

1. Check with management first to make sure the location isn't in the way or infringing on anyone's space.
2. Set clear guidelines of what people can bring: items should be gently used, clean, and desirable.
2. Make sure to keep the space tidy and encourage colleagues to hang clothes back up.
3. Set a deadline for how long items can remain before they are taken to a donation site.
4. Share photos of happy staff with their "new" things to keep up momentum.

A Public Agency Reducing Waste in Alameda County

StopWaste helps Alameda County’s businesses, residents, and schools waste less, recycle properly, and use water, energy, and other resources efficiently.

At home, we:

  • Reduce wasted food by helping residents plan, store, eat, and compost food efficiently.

  • Provide free drop-off of household hazardous waste to keep toxins out of the landfill.

  • Help keep plastics out of our creeks and the Bay through implementation of the reusable bag law.
  • At work, we:

  • Help businesses and property managers comply with ordinances for mandatory recycling and composting.

  • Support local businesses in the adoption of more sustainable packaging.

  • Assist food generators in donating food that would otherwise end up in the landfill.
  • At school and in the community, we:

  • Help students address environmental issues and put the 4Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot/Compost - into practice.

  • Provide grants and support to local organizations for innovative reuse and wasted food reduction projects.

  • Develop and run energy upgrade programs to make multifamily buildings more comfortable and efficient.

Hello, I live in San Lorenzo and am wondering if anyone knows where I can recycle clothes (socks, shirts, pants, jeans, etc.) that are no longer in condition to be donated.
Any ideas for how best to dispose of textbooks and other books with a deadline looming? Asking for a friend who is a teacher librarian in Oakland Unified. She says they unload a lot of books every year. Thanks in advance.
any groups that might be in need of a conference table. (no chairs) . It has 3 leaves and can expand another 5 1/2 feet. It could hold 12 people. It has some minor scuffs from a magic marker, but could easily be lightly sanded away. message me at 2Agoodcause.org
So the Replanet recycling center I go to says they will no longer accept these milk containers. Can they be recycled anywhere?
I'm thinking maybe we could look into getting these here for the Oakland Marathon and Bay to Breakers. Anyone have any contacts?
How do I discard used cooking oil?
Help stop Corporate Greed and Waste Good Morning, I have a plea here for your help. Starting Feb 7 through Feb 13, Joann's Fabric stores, nationwide is running a trade in your old sewing machine sale. While I understand you may not consider old sewing machines to be newsworthy, my problem is this: I have contacted Joann's Corporate and have not received a response. First I was told the machines would be donated and or scrapped/ trashed. Other concerned citizens have approached individual store managers and have been told the machines will be destroyed. My issue is many old machines that are made of all metal are so well built they are still working today and are better built than the plastic machines sold today. It is bad for the environment for Joann's to trash sewing machines. We need to reduce the amount of trash and keep things from going in landfills. As a large corporation Joann's should care more for the environment and set a positive example. This is similar to the cash for clunkers program that had negative effects on the environment and removed low cost vehicles from circulation. Can you please help me to expose Joann for their plan to destroy valuable sewing machines. Please help me to keep these out of the landfills and force Joann's to do the right thing. Thank you. Holly
Is it true that your trucks keeps track of when each bin is picked up for each residence on pickup day? I was told that today when I called because my green bin was not picked up yesterday.
I am wondering if any elementary schools in the Bay Area or anywhere uses the pump bottles for ketchup in the cafeteria. My school still uses the individual packets which seems very unfriendly to the environment. I am hoping to promote more green practices at school. Thank you.
