24 Children's Books To Read In Honor Of Black History Month

February marks Black History Month, and story time is just one of the many occasions when you can teach your kids about the important accomplishments of black pioneers and trailblazers. Below is a link to 24 children's books by black authors, about black figures or focused on black culture that you can read to your kids during Black History Month (or year-round!).

And year-round, of course.

Joseph looked down at the new toothbrush in the cup by the bathroom sink. The cup was green - his favorite color. Someone knew his favorite color he thought. His eyes shifted to the Minecraft towel hanging on the hook next to him… this was his towel. His very own. His heart raced. Forgetting for a moment that he was no longer in the foster home where he was faced with a very brief and fleeting time limit on his bathroom activities, he hastily brushed his teeth and marched to his room. He surprised himself when he unexpectedly blurted out the words “my room” as if saying it out loud would make it seem more real and less like a dream. The words sounded awkward when he heard them and he wondered if he had ever said that phrase before. He hadn’t. He had never had his own room.

He looked up and there she was, sitting in a wooden chair placed carefully next to the bed, waiting for him with the kindest, warmest smile he had ever seen. In her hand... was a book. He looked at her and hesitantly laid down in the bed. He didn’t say a word.

He couldn’t.

Was this really happening? He held his breath in anticipation for what he imagined would be one of the most magical moments of his life…a moment he had pictured over and over again. He closed his eyes, and ten-year-old Joseph listened blissfully to his first ever bedtime story. At ten years old, Joseph was finally given a chance to have what he always wished for - a family.

This holiday season, you can make a child's wish come true by making a donation to Family Builders. Every donation will help create a loving, nurturing permanent family for a child in foster care.

This may be the most important gift you give this holiday season.

We are still looking for gift card donations for our teens in foster care this holiday season. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to be used to purchase gift cards, you can do so through this Facebook post or on our website www.familybuilders.org. You can also drop gift cards off at the office in-person or ship them directly to the office.

GIVE A TEEN IN FOSTER CARE A GIFT THAT COUNTS

Every year Family Builders collects holiday wish lists from children in foster care and collect donations to ensure every receives a gift that truly makes them feel special. However, teens in foster care are often forgotten, or receive gifts that are intended for younger children. You can help change that with a gift as simple as a gift card.

WHY GIFT CARDS?
Teens in foster care often don’t get to go shopping for their own things. Like any other teenager, choosing their own clothing and accessories is an important part of fitting in and expressing their personality. Our teens tell us that more than anything, they just want to go shopping with their friends and enjoy the simple luxury of picking out their own clothes.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
1) Deliver or mail gift cards to our office: Family Builders by Adoption, 1900 Embarcadero #303 Oakland, CA 94606
2) Mail a check with “Gift Card Drive” on the memo line to the address above.
3) Donate online and write ”holiday gift drive” in the comment section. Donation website: https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/1438345

TIPS:
1) Gifts of any denomination are appreciated. Our goal is to give $25 to each of our teens in foster care.
2) Please write the amount of the gift on the gift card so that we can distribute appropriately.
3) Select stores that teens would enjoy! Popular stores include: Target, Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, Old Navy, and Game Stop.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to honor the transgender people whom we've lost to violence.

Today, take a moment to reflect on what our community has lost - and let every day going forward be a day of action that will move us toward a world where transgender individuals can live freely and fully.

In an effort to raise awareness this National Adoption Month, Family Builders is excited to share stories from some of our own finalized families. We are happy to introduce Sonya and Mila!

"Some part of me always knew I wanted to adopt. Early in my career I worked with HIV positive children, most of whom were in foster and adoptive families. I thought those families were amazing and I could envision myself forming a similar type of family. But when I started on my own adoption path, I found the process, and all the choices, to be pretty overwhelming. I explored various paths to adoption, and various Bay Area agencies, but I knew the first time I walked into Family Builders that they were the agency I wanted to work with. Around the table from me at the orientation were such a wonderful diversity of families--single parent families and two parent families, younger families and older families, families with children and families without, and the most amazing racial, gender, and sexual diversity I'd seen at any adoption agency. I knew this was the type of group I wanted to engage with. Working with Family Builders I always felt I had an ally on my side. I felt able to talk honestly about my questions and concerns, and Family Builders staff supported me on the complex path of decision making. I think that's a unique thing that an agency like Family Builders can offer--complete advocacy for you, the prospective adoptive family. I just finalized my adoption of my daughter Mila, currently 15 months old. It took us only a little more than a year to navigate the fost-adopt process, which is pretty speedy. It's been an a amazing journey of learning and the support I received from Family Builders, and the connections I made with other Family Builders families have been invaluable. Thank you Family Builders for helping me find my family!"
--Sonya (45) and Mila (15 months)

Thank you for sharing, Sonya! Everyone at Family Builders wishes you well!

Before I Was Adopted

More than 125,000 children are waiting to be adopted from foster care in the United States — and that number continues to rise as families are devastated by the opioid crisis and other issues. The teenagers featured in this video made by our partners at The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption bravely agreed to share their experiences before adoption because they want other children to be adopted too.

Family Builders by Adoption

Family Builders is here to help find permanent, loving families for children and youth in the foster care system - that's our only goal. We connect children with individuals and couples who can provide safe, stable, nurturing families. Our services are free and confidential, and include adoption, foster care, and other forms of permanency. We have experience working with all types of children, youth, and families.

Family Builders welcomes traditional families; single-parent families; both men and women; gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender families; transracial and multiracial families; and all other families as prospective adoptive parents. Family Builders is committed to serving all families equally with dignity and respect. We provide all services in English and Spanish and welcome monolingual Spanish-speaking families.

We do not discriminate on the basis of the fact or perception of a person’s race, creed, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, height, weight, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, domestic partner status, parental status, marital status, veteran status, genetic information, medical status or disability, or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or HIV status.

Family Builders has been providing services and programs for children and families since 1976.

Our staff and board are made up of individuals who believe strongly that children have the right to a solid and loving family. We invite you to get to know who we are and to contact us to learn more about becoming a parent to child who needs a family.
