Oakland Promise 5yr Anniversary

Five years ago today we launched the Oakland Promise to send more kids from #Oakland to-and-thru college with resources, support, and Mentors. Here’s how we’re doing so far:

We’ve awarded over 1,800 high school seniors with 2-4 year scholarships. Opened 800+ College Savings Accounts, and 610 family-owned accounts for our Brilliant Babies and K2C programs respectively. Given 20,000 elementary school students Early College Scholarship Funds.

Now, we need to do more. We’re calling on Bay Area residents to serve as Mentors to our next generation of Oakland Scholars. If you’d like to join a community movement that elevates our youth, please visit https://tfaforms.com/4762495 today!

Today, I joined with our #Oakland health care heroes and the clergy of Our Lady of Lourdes Church to participate in a national moment of remembrance in honor of those who have lost their lives to COVID-19.

Tonight, Oakland City Hall will shine amber in recognition of the national #COVIDMemorial. Every life lost to this deadly virus reverberates throughout our entire community. This is a moment to pause and honor those we have lost, support their loved ones, express appreciation to our health care heroes, and look to the future with hope as we continue to work towards healing our country and ending this pandemic. #COVIDMemorial

This is Marquisse, Oakland native. His family is one of 5,000 households Keep Oakland Housed prevented from falling into homelessness w/ direct financial relief. His new apartment offers peace of mind knowing that he + his daughter have a place to call home.

In its first two years, Keep Oakland Housed has served nearly 5,000 households who faced eviction, displacement, or imminent homelessness. Our program gave $9M+ in emergency financial + legal assistance to vulnerable families.

We’re not done. Now we call on our state + federal partners to scale up Oakland’s innovative pilot. We must build the permanent structures within our public institutions to stop homelessness from happening in the first place — and in Oakland, we’ve created the road map to do it.

Today Oakland secured + opened 17 residential homes for our unsheltered residents. 100+ will move into their “forever homes” this holiday season thanks to Gov. Gavin Newsom's Project HomeKey, CrankStart Foundation, and Bay Area Community Services (BACS).

Our strategy to buy-and-convert housing for our unsheltered builds on last week’s opening of Clifton Hall, now open to 100+ seniors and families: http://bit.ly/3rlVSMG

We have more work to do. No one should spend a night outdoors in our city, and I’m deeply grateful to our devoted Oakland staff, BACS, and community partners for their urgency, innovation, and compassion.

Dear Mayor Schaaf, First, thank you for all your hard work for Oakland. I appreciate your ceremony to honor everyone who has died due to COVID – our family lost my beloved grandfather last year. However, I was very disappointed to see the "dove release.” Releasing captive birds seems celebratory, but it actually puts these domestic pigeons — unaccustomed to fending for themselves — under extreme duress. They have no ability to protect themselves from predators or find food, water, and shelter. Their white coloring, meant to symbolize innocence, is a beacon to birds of prey. The unfortunate majority are eaten alive or die of starvation and exposure. The lucky ones are secured and taken to fosters or shelters, where the most fortunate ones are adopted. This puts a strain on our volunteer rescue community as well as public shelters. The harms of this practice are not widely known. Here are a couple of helpful articles from Palomacy Pigeon & Dove Adoptions, a local non-profit: https://www.pigeonrescue.org/faqs-2/why-dove-releases-are-cruel/ http://www.pigeonrescue.org/2016/06/07/the-truth-about-dove-releases/ You can help by disengaging from future "releases" and making a statement to raise awareness about the impact on these birds. It would make a big difference if you could also help call attention to the need for good homes; these intelligent and emotional birds make wonderful companion animals. Here are just a few of the available birds who are currently in Palomacy’s foster care: https://www.pigeonrescue.org/birds/available-birds/ Thank you for anything you can do to turn this situation around! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or to contact Palomacy with any questions you may have. Kindly, Emily
Sad all the trash around Oakland power plant!
ALL THE ILLEGAL DUMPING NEXT TO THE OAKLAND POWER PLANT IS SAD!
I don't understand why the city is ticketing cars for street sweeping when the residents of the city of Oakland are on a stay a home order because of the pandemic or work from home or are unemployed because of the pandemic. the city is forcing people outside of the homes for at least a four hours of the morning just to avoid a parking ticket . Where are people to go for four hours? The grocery store? Where the employees there are at risk themselves and we the residents have to expose our selves to each other. The city is trying to make MONEY off the people who reside in the city of Oakland . WE DON"T HAVE MONEY EITHER DO A BETTER JOB LIBBY.
You only talk about the killings in Oakland to tally the score at the end of the year. It seems only in black communities is it swept under the carpet year after year and like O.J. you blame white people and the police.
The CEO of Wells Fargo said he wanted to start a program to eliminate poverty in California... Get him to commit the $378 billion that the bank laundered for El Chapo between 2006 and 2008, plus the profit that the bank made from the illegal foreclosures made by the bank between 2006 and 2008, in an account that would back debit cards which would be distributed to each adult in California, including nonviolent prisoners!!! The debit cads would have a $300 per day limit, use it or lose it for those who make more than $65,000 that day, unless you are low income and need to pay for rent, car note, insurance, food or health care.... Let people have debit cards and you will see that people will not spend $300 per day! However, if the cards are directed toward small businesses and restaurants, even those who are well off "rich" as McConnell put it, would use the cards to jump start the economy!!! This can be done right now!!! You can have the credit!!!! Happy New Year!! Sincerely, Allen Sanford https://www.facebook.com/RealEstateFraudOrGovernmentSanctionedRacketeering/
There has been an uptick in violent crime in multiple neighborhoods- last night shells from at least 60+ shots recovered from an AR15, AK47 and hand gun on a residential street in Redwood Heights. This street is full of families. A shot went through the room of a child and hit a house of innocent people multiple times. People outside were saved only by a delivery van being parked in an area they could hide behind. CVS up the hill has been robbed 2x in the last 2 days, Taco Bell robbed last night WHILE the cops were a few blocks away attending to the shooting, today on 35th and MacArthur a man was shot in the chest, a few weeks ago 27 shots were exchanged off 35th. Multiple people have been car jacked at gun point, robbed, mugged... yet we haven't a word from you. We want to know why. We don't expect you to solve the issues in a day but we do expect acknowledgment of what is happening. We expect to have it addressed. Please explain why it hasn't been. How much worse does it have to get?
The Laurel District and Redwood heights have become a war zone. Crime in Oakland is rampant and there are never any police in sight! What are you going to do about it? Your citizens are exhausted by it and need you to take action!
Sam Liccardo pushed out this very important message. What say you? #stopthespreadletsdoit
