The City of Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) is temporarily suspending the combined parking/loading zones in Chinatown from May 1 to December 31, 2021. In response to community requests for more general metered parking opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery, OakDOT will allow any vehicle to park and pay in combined parking/loading zones from 8AM to 6PM. While the temporary suspension is in effect, payment is still required.

自2021年5月1日起至12月31日止,屋崙市交通局 (City of Oakland Department of Transportation, OakDOT)

"The Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce tirelessly promotes and advocates for business and trade in the Asian community. In representing many of Chinatown's merchants and residents, and in light of nearly non-stop crimes against Asians, we continue to call for greater public safety. Unfortunately, yesterday on Thursday, April 29, as I was on my way to see a victim of crime, I myself was victimized in a brazen assault in Oakland during broad daylight. I urge the mayor and city council for continued support for safety efforts in Chinatown, including cameras, lighting, law enforcement presence and the ambassador program."
- Carl Chan, president, Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce

US Bank and Clamor generously donated safety kits to local organizations and groups, which we helped to distribute. One of the donation recipients passed out these safety kits when they hosted an outdoor self-defense training last Saturday in Milpitas/South Bay. They also passed out some beverages donated by our member, Pepsi. We hope these donations can help our community stay safe!

Last New Member Monday, we introduced an OG milk tea shop, Quickly. This week, we will be introducing a local mom and pop milk tea shop, Golden Tea Shop!

As much as we try to lie to ourselves, most milk teas and fruit teas are not the healthiest beverages. However, Golden Tea Shop provides many healthier tea options. For example, their Flat Tummy Tea, Beauty Tea, and Detox Tea, are all healthier tea options. They also use real fruit and tea leaves in all their drinks. You can even purchase your own tea leaves in their tea leaves shop next door!

Unlike many popular milk tea shops that offer snack items such as popcorn chicken or calamari, Golden Tea Shop offers egg puff with ice cream, grass jelly dessert, and my personal favorite, Rice Noodle Roll with Mixed Sauce. If you come to Chinatown and don't know which milk tea shop to try, come support a local mom and pop shop with a unique menu, Golden Tea Shop!

This New Member Monday we will be introducing an OG milk tea shop, Quickly Oakland Chinatown. As one of the first milk tea chains to expand globally, many like myself grew up with Quickly being one of their first milk tea experiences. Especially, back when boba was not as popular, Quickly was one of the few places we could find to enjoy a nice milk tea or slushie or snack. Despite all the new boba shops popping up left and right in Oakland Chinatown, let's not forget about Quickly either. They constantly release new snacks and drinks so every visit is a new experience.

Earlier this week, patrol volunteers helped pass out 150 whistles to the elderly in Oakland Chinatown! These whistles were donated by Delta Chinatown Initiative - SF, When We Come Together, and the GoFundMe "Whistles for our Asian elders." They have already raised enough to buy 5,000 whistles with breakaway lanyards and instructions in 7 different languages. If you would like to learn more about their efforts and possibly even donate, here is the GoFundMe link.

04/13/2021

In 2021, PG&E and East Bay Community Energy will transition customers to a Time-of-Use (TOU) rate plan based on when you use electricity.

In May 2021, residential customers throughout Alameda County who are on a flat-rate plan (tiered or volume-based) will be placed onto Time-of-Use rates. Most businesses switched to Time-of-Use B rates last month in March. Time-of-Use rate plans charge customers based on when they use electricity. The default residential plan, E-TOU-C, has peak rates from 4-9 PM. By shifting some electricity usage to non-peak hours when energy costs less (and is typically less polluting), you can lower your bill and support a healthier environment.

For more information, please refer to the flyer.

The destruction of Oakland's Chinatown from crime and homelessness should be a wake-up call to everyone that allowing sleeping on the sidewalks, public defecation and drug abuse openly on the street only invites more crimes like robberies and assaults. For years, the city of Oakland allowed the homeless mentally ill and drug abusers to openly sleep and defecate on the streets of Chinatown. The police also refused to enforce trespass laws or get people into appropriate treatment or face any other consequences for their bad behavior. What followed was an open invitation to other actors to prey further on the elderly and Asian population with assaults and robberies since there was seemingly an "anything goes" attitude by the city while other parts of downtown were not so affected. The decline of Chinatown is an example of the "broken windows" theory that if you let one thing go then much worse things will follow and soon you have nothing left of what was once a vibrant and thriving ethnic community. The calls now for racial justice should also include Asian-Americans instead of what has transpired here that would never have been tolerated if the same thing had happened in other neighborhoods.
