Rob Bonta serves in the 18th District of the California State Assembly representing Alameda, Oakland, and San Leandro. This is my official government page for my Assembly office.

Assemblymember Rob Bonta was elected to the California State Assembly's 18th District in 2012, where he represents the cities of Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro as the first Filipino American legislator in the 165-year history of California. Rob’s passion for justice and equality was instilled in him at a very young age by his parents, who taught him to understand injustice and the importance of joining the struggle to empower vulnerable communities. His father was involved in the Civil Rights Movement, and stood with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Deep South---marching for equality and justice in Selma. His mother was and continues to be a long-time leader in the Filipino social justice movement. Growing up in a trailer just a few hundred yards from César Chávez’s home, Bonta watched closely as his parents organized Filipino and Mexican American farm workers, infusing his formative years with first-hand experience of one of the greatest peaceful social, racial, and economic justice movements of all time. This had a huge impact on Rob’s life choices and pursuits, inspiring his life’s commitment to helping people. Rob believed legal training was one of the most powerful ways to effect positive and profound change in the lives of those who needed it most. He worked his way through college cleaning laundry rooms and, with the help of financial aid, was able to achieve his dream of attending some of the best universities in the world, obtaining his Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School after attending Yale College and Oxford University in England. Earning honors in college, Rob was also a scholar athlete, captaining the Yale Soccer team. He also paved the way for the advancement of students of color as a mentor and volunteered in support of local children struggling with poverty. His legal career included work as a Deputy City Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco, where he represented the City and County and its employees, and as a private attorney, where he fought to protect Californians from exploitation and racial profiling. Rob was undefeated at trial, never losing a jury verdict for his clients. Prior to being elected to the Alameda City Council, Rob served as the Chair of the City of Alameda’s Economic Development Commission, where he focused on business attraction and retention efforts, and as board president for the Social Service Human Relations Board, where he fought to protect safety net services for the most vulnerable members of the community. As Vice Mayor of the City of Alameda, Bonta strongly supported public safety, fostered economic development, and exercised fiscal responsibility. Bonta currently serves as the Assistant Majority Leader. He serves on the Appropriations, Communications and Conveyance, Governmental Organization, and Health Committees. He is also chair of the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus and serves on the Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color. Rob and his wife Mialisa live in Alameda with their three children.

Calling out and condemning API hate.

The violence and hate-fueled attacks on the API community, including on our beloved elders, must be condemned and denounced by all. This morning, the API Legislative Caucus came together in solidary to call out these unacceptable and reprehensible acts. In Oakland alone, we’ve seen horrific and vicious attacks targeting our seniors. And across the country in New York, an older Filipino American man was slashed across the face, requiring 100 stitches and disfiguring his face. These are our Lolas and Lolos, Titas and Titos, Ninangs and Ninongs. All communities deserve to be seen, valued and protected. We must recommit to creating prevention, restoration, healing, accountability, and safety for our API community.

The violence and hate-fueled attacks on the #API community, including on our treasured seniors, must end and be condemned, as Vice President Kamala Harris and I wrote last spring! All communities deserve to be seen, valued and protected!

Trump called COVID “the China virus” & “Kung-Flu”.

In Oakland alone, we’ve seen vicious attacks against senior citizens and other hate crimes committed against API residents. And hate crimes against many groups have been on rise in the Trump era.

I commend President Joe Biden and VP Harris for their recent order fighting API hate crimes, but we can’t stop there. Government at every level must confront these troubling trends, take action, and fund programs to stop this unacceptable discrimination and violence.

#MLK’s Legacy and Teachings Remain and Resonate Today

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in our nation, a day that is so powerful and so meaningful to all of us. It’s a day when we honor a towering and timeless hero who lost his life in the fight for racial and social justice in America. His legacy and teachings remain and resonate in our world today.

I am reminded of how Dr. King shaped my life as well as my family’s, and how he transformed our world for the better. I’ve been reflecting on my father, Warren, who listened to Dr. King’s speeches on audiocassette and then felt compelled to act by marching for voting rights in the deep South. 2020 has not been so different from the civil rights movement in some ways. 2020 has made us question just how much progress we’ve actually made. This is a bold, urgent, and forward-thinking plan that addresses head-on with smart investments and policies, and with Californians and equity at the forefront, our state’s biggest challenges, including vaccine distribution, the pandemic response, the Golden State Stimulus, homelessness reduction, wildfire resilience and beyond. Even in normal times, an unexpected expense like a car repair or medical bill can cause hard-working families to lose their homes or be unable to put food on the table. This award honors the activism and leadership of a Californian who dedicated her life to fighting injustices including the Japanese Internment during WWII. She also became active in the Civil Rights Movement participating in sit-ins and speaking out against discrimination. Yuri Kochiyama’s 60 years of social justice advocacy and activism inspired countless others to join the fight for a better, fairer world. Congratulations to District 18’s 2020 Social Justice Champion Black Organizing Project. The Black Organizing Project works for racial, social, and economic justice through grassroots community organizing and policy-change. This year, they helped pass the George Floyd Resolution to eliminate the Oakland Schools’ Police Department and end the dangerous over-policing of our students. Celebrating the Life of Dolores Velasco

Dolores Velasco passed away on Wednesday, August 5th, at the age of 85. Dolores committed her life to the service of others and spent decades documenting the lives of the Filipino Manongs and the United Farm Workers movement. She is remembered as a caring, funny and thoughtful leader who will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
