Lavender Seniors of the East Bay

Lavender Seniors of the East Bay Lavender Seniors of the East Bay' mission is to improve the lives of LGBT elders living in the East San Francisco Bay Area with support services, outreach, education, and advocacy.
Started in 1994 by a group of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) elders concerned with a lack of LGBT elder specific services or legal protections in Alameda County or in California, Lavender Seniors of the East Bay is a grassroots volunteer driven organization working to better enable LGBT older adults to age in their community. The organization is a project of the Tides Center. The Tides Center is a national non-profit organization focused on social justice issues. Tides provides back end business affairs, financial systems, and human resources as well as the 501(c)3 umbrella that Lavender Seniors operates under. Tides allows the small staff and volunteers at Lavender Seniors to work directly on programs and services while at the same time reducing indirect overhead and administration associated with legal, HR, financial, and compliance personnel.

Services are mainly provided by a dedicated cadre of volunteers of all ages. Most volunteers are LGBT elders themselves. A fundamental value of Lavender Seniors is that civic engagement leads to a good life in later years. Intersted volunteers can download an application from www.lavenderseniors.org under "Get Involved."

Mission: Lavender Seniors of the East Bay' mission is to improve the lives of LGBT elders with support services, outreach, education, and advocacy.

Just minutes ago, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, swept away laws that bar same-sex couples from marrying in the 13 states that still have them in place.  The ruling is a huge victory not just for couples living in those states; it means those of us in the other 37 states no longer will hav…

Before You Know It: What We Can Learn From the LGBT Senior Community

Huffington Post has a great article about the LGBT senior community

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/pj-raval/before-you-know-it-lgbt-senior-community_b_3474044.html

The inspiration behind Before You Know It came in 2008, when I was invited to screen my last film in upstate New York. There was a good LGBT turnout, and they were almost exclusively LGBT seniors. I realized how little I'd seen or heard of them as a community, and I started to question why.
